The 2020 Democratic primary is certainly full of characters, from business heads practically bribing their way support, to old-guard statesmen just trying to get through their lines without flubbing. While this may not be what the nation truly needs, it has been undeniably entertaining.
One of the most peculiar persons in this motley crew of progressives and left-leaning centrists has been Marianne Williamson – a California Democrat known for her authorship of several spiritual, self-help books, and her penchant for woo-woo, new age speak. During one of her most memorable debate moment, Williamson would describe President Donald Trump as a “dark psychic force” oppressing the nation.
It is no surprise that Williamson is a long-shot candidate, but what is surprising is her futile resilience. This week, the author laid off her entire campaign staff in a move that many “saw coming”.
Despite this, Williamson doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
Politico reported that Williamson confirmed she has laid off her staff, but she said she will not drop out “as long as I feel a connection to voters:”
Responding to a fan on Twitter expressing hope that she would remain in the race for the Democratic nomination, the spiritual guru replied that “reports of the end of my campaign have been drastically exaggerated today,” and linked to a statement on her campaign website asserting she was not going anywhere.
“I am not suspending my candidacy, however; a campaign not having a huge war chest should not be what determines its fate,” Williamson said. The point of my candidacy has been to tell the heart’s truth and that does not cost money. Forging a new path for campaigns is going to be necessary, if we’re ever to forge a new path for our country.”
On Twitter, she argued that “money is not what determines one’s value and it’s not what should determine the legitimacy of one’s political campaign.”
Among the reasons that Williamson cited for staying involved are her hopes to “wage peace”, (instead of war), and promote the “politics of love”.
