Were Military absentee ballots lost that could have changed election outcome?

A story originating at TheDuffelBlog.com says that military absentee ballots were “hours after the deadline for them to be counted, with preliminary counts showing that they would have overturned the vote in several states and brought a victory for Governor Mitt Romney. Well the story is completely false.

It has been widely circulated. Several things to keep in mind on this story. The first thing to consider is that “sources” was the first word used, but not linked to or named. That in itself is not necessarily a problem since there are many credible news outlets that will claim sources without naming them. But let’s be real here. This is a major presidential election. Where are the leaders of the losing party at on this? Why are they not crying out about this?

Second, according to the story,

Officials say the ballots were delivered late due to problems within the military mail system. Tracking invoices show the ballots sat in a warehouse for a month, then they were accidentally labeled as ammunition and shipped to Afghanistan.

OK if this were going on, then we have a real problem in the military. But the story continues that these ballots were packed up and sent back to the U.S., claiming the flight was delayed “so that the crew could get tax free pay for the month,” but finally arriving on November 7, the very day the article was posted! There is no way votes could have been counted and changed the outcome of the election in the time they allegedly arrived and the time this story was produced.

Finally, a “Rear Admiral John Dawes” said that he had ordered that “everyone cast their votes eight months ago.”

Eight months ago? Well let’s see, eight months ago was March. The Republican primaries were not even finished and there were still four participants. In fact, the Democrats had not nominated anyone either.

So the truth of the matter is that none of this is true. If it were there is no doubt this would be all over the place with credible evidence to back it up by now. There isn’t.

In fact, it’s more obvious than you would think. TDB is a parody site. It is not a news site. The ‘About Us’ section provides the following info:

The Duffel Blog serves the men and women of the US Military with a daily dose of military humor, funny military pictures, and faux news. We take an interesting and funny look at military life. We focus on veterans, military stories, defense, politics (sometimes) and life on base — with a comedic twist. We are in no way, shape, or form, a real news outlet. Just about everything on this website is satirical in nature.
