NRA Walks Out On Obama Administration's Attack On Second Amendment

This week the National Rifle Association went to the White House to talk about their plan for school safety following NRA vice president Wayne LaPierre's plan to put a police officer at every school. They walked out of the meeting when they realized that it was nothing more than an attack on the Second Amendment.

After attending the summit with Vice President Joe Biden to talk about measures that could be implemented to reduce future incidences of gun violence in public schools, the NRA said that none of their proposals were even on the table at the meeting.

In a statement issued the the Legal wing of the NRA, they wrote:

The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.

We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

There certainly should be no reason to be "disappointed" at how the Obama task force responded. In fact, I could have saved the NRA the trip to Washington to inform them that the Obama administration is targeting the Second Amendment. I could have also saved them their breath and money in their promotion of their Shield program. Frankly, the first thing out of the NRA's mouth following the Newtown, Connecticut shooting should have been to demand that school officials and teachers be allowed to exercise their Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, but they didn't do that. They offered a big government solution. This is unfortunate considering they are the nation's biggest gun lobby organization.
