US Air Force to Atheists: Recognize God in Your Oath or Take a Hike

It seems that the United States Air Force isn’t taking the politically correct route. They have now declared that all those who enlist must recite “So help me God” in their enlistment oath. reports:

Months after the Air Force last year said “So help me God” was an optional line when taking the oath of enlistment or reenlistment, it reversed itself. The decision will require atheists to infer a belief in a supreme being if they want to remain in the military.

At Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, the airman was told on Aug. 25 that he would not be allowed to continue unless he recited the oath that references God, said Monica Miller, an attorney for Appignani Humanist Legal Center in Washington.

The issue was sparked when an unnamed member of the US Air Force refused to recite “so help me God” in his enlistment oath. He was backed by the American Humanist Association (AHA).

According to the AHA press release, he was told by his superiors to make his oath before God or leave the Air Force.

In a letter, issued by AHA to the Office of Inspector General of the Air Force, the claim was made that “Any attempt to coerce an atheist ‘to take an affirmation despite [his] sincere religions objections [is also] a violation of the Free Exercise Clause.”

Isn’t that interesting? I thought self-professed atheists didn’t believe in religion? Now they want to make religion the basis for their refusal to follow the oath they take to serve in the armed forces? As was demonstrated in the film God’s Not Dead, the truth always comes out. There is no such thing as an atheist. They are anti-theists, nothing more.

“The government cannot compel a nonbeliever to take an oath that affirms the existence of a supreme being,” Miller said. “Numerous cases affirm that atheists have the right to omit theistic language from enlistment or reenlistment contracts.”

However, spokeswoman Rose Richeson told, “Reciting ‘So help me God’ in the reenlistment and commissioning oaths is a statutory requirement under Title 10 U.S.C. §502. Air Force Instruction on the oath is consistent with the language mandated in the law.”

“Airmen are no longer authorized to omit the words ‘So help me God’,” Richeson said.

Ironically, Miller called the Air Force position “unbelievable.”

Richeson also provided a statement to Al Jazeera, in which she said the particular airman’s “‘term of service expires in November 2014’ and that ‘he has until this time to complete’ Department of Defense Form 4, which contains the oath with the words ‘so help me God’.”

RT adds:

This is not the first time the military, and the Air Force specifically, has come under fire for its relationship with religion. The Air Force Academy entered the spotlight in July 2012, when accusations of improper proselytizing on the Colorado Springs, Colo. campus arose, the Huffington Post reported. At the same time, evangelical Christians complained that the military branch was suppressing religious freedom.

This appears to be yet another blow to anti-theists. Just last month, we reported on how the Navy repented of its caving to atheist group Freedom from Religion Foundation and returned Bibles back to their lodges.

Before you go on a “free speech” tirade, understand that freedom is always to do the right thing, not the wrong thing. Recognizing the Creator is always the right thing and we need far less atheist ideals in society. Even S.E. Cupp thinks so.
