UIC Student Demonstrates Why 50 Shades of Grey is Detrimental to Men’s Minds and Women’s Safety

We are often oblivious to the effect images have on our thinking. It is every hard for people to see the change that they go through from what they watch. The reason is that it is so subtle. When we watch violence, there is a desensitizing that occurs. We are not as appalled by violence as it is a common thing to see. We watch it every night on television. Now, sexual violence is becoming something more common. The movie, 50 Shades of Grey has pushed sadomasochism to the forefront of pop-culture.

We have to ask what the effects of such a movie would have on our thinking. But, it seems maybe a more important question is what effect does it have on our desires? This is especially true of those who are less experienced and more apt to experiment. We are beginning to see the rotten fruit come to bare.

The Chicago Tribune reports:

A University of Illinois at Chicago student leader has been charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old female student in what Cook County prosecutors say was a re-enactment of scenes from the film “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

What exactly happened is similar to many assaults. The woman is convinced to participate in sex, but is unwilling to go as far as her partner wishes to go. She said stop, and he was unwilling or unable to comply.

The Tribune further reports about what Freshman Mohammad Hossain did:

Once inside his dorm, in the 900 block of West Harrison Street, Hossain allegedly asked the woman to remove her clothing and she did, keeping on her bra and underwear, Karr said. He then bound her hands above her head and to a bed with a belt, used another belt to bind her legs and stuffed a necktie into her mouth, Karr said.

Hossain used a knit cap to cover the woman’s eyes, Karr said, and removed the woman’s bra and underwear. He then began striking the woman with a belt. After hitting her several times, the woman told Hossain he was hurting her, told him to stop “and began shaking her head and crying.”

Here is the issue that most of us miss. We are not able to view such things and those things not have an effect on us, our thoughts, and desires. We cannot view a woman, taking enjoyment from being beaten and not be changed. We also have to understand that these kinds of images make women out to be mere objects.

How else can you explain a 19-year-old man refusing to release a women he had been intimate with previously? It is what God’s Word tells us. We cannot take fire into our bosom and not be burned (Prov. 6:27). Sexual sin is different than all others as Paul points out.

I Corinthians 6:18 reads:

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the [a]immoral man sins against his own body.

Hossain allegedly told police he and the woman were re-enacting scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

If we fail to recognize what effects these kinds of films in mainstream media have on our minds and the minds of our children, we can only expect more of the same.
