Trump Pushes Forward with Plan to Use Reservists and Nat’l Guard to Fight Virus

With the nation still locked in a battle with COVID-19 that likely won’t peak for another week or more, President Trump appears to be pulling out all the stops in order to come out on top.

America is now the epicenter of this novel and deadly strain of coronavirus, thanks in no small part to New York City’s population density and a bunch of spring breakers in Florida who arrogantly threw caution to the wind.

We all have a role to play in this mess, with ordinary Americans being asked to practice social distancing in order to starve the virus of victims.  This will allow our healthcare workers the time and resources needed to treat patients without overloading our entire medical infrastructure.

The federal government has a role to play as well, with economic stimulus already on the way for a great many Americans who are out of work in order to save lives.

Now, the military is getting involved as well.

President Donald Trump has authorized Defense Secretary Mark Esper to order units and individual members in the National Guard and Reserves, as well as “certain Individual Ready Reserve members,” to active duty to augment forces in the coronavirus response, according to the chief Pentagon spokesperson.

“Today the President signed an Executive Order authorizing Secretary Esper to order units and individual members in the National Guard and Reserves and certain Individual Ready Reserve members, to active duty to augment forces for the effective response to the coronavirus outbreak,” said Jonathan Hoffman in a statement released late Friday evening.

The statement said that decisions about which individuals may be activated are still being reviewed.

“Generally, these members will be persons in Headquarters units and persons with high demand medical capabilities whose call-up would not adversely affect their civilian communities,” the statement said.

There was no clear idea exactly what the magnitude of the military involvement could bee, given just how fluid the situation is.
