Trump decries ‘slippery slope’ of knee-jerk gun legislation

While there is a very real, very emotional element to our nation’s latest spate of mass shootings, we must ask ourselves some tough questions regarding the historical context of our next steps.

The constant, knee-jerk reactions of the liberal left do not account for any of our nation’s most sacred truths – namely that the Second Amendment is our only true insurance against tyranny.  The loss of our right to bear arms would open the US up to threats of a varied and vicious nature, both foreign and domestic, and make vulnerable the people of this free nation.

President Trump has been grappling with the dichotomy people liberty and emotion over the course of the last few weeks, as lawmakers from both sides of the aisle push for stricter gun control.

Today, the Commander in Chief put his foot down on the subject while recognizing that any infringement upon the right to bear arms is a dangerous precedent to set.

President Trump suggested Democrats have given up any defense of the Second Amendment and pledged that he will not allow Americans’ gun rights to be swept away on the “slippery slope” of gun control.

Trump made the comments while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday.

He said, “We have very, very strong background checks right now. But we have, sort of, missing areas and areas that don’t complete the whole circle. And we’re looking at different things.”

Trump continued:

“The Democrats would, I believe — I think they’d give up the Second Amendment.  And the people that — a lot of the people that put me where I am are strong believers in the Second Amendment — and I am, also.  And we have to be very careful about that.  You know, they call it the ‘slippery slope,’ and all of the sudden, everything gets taken away.  We’re not going to let that happen.”

This latest statement will come as a relief for many Trump voters who had found themselves concerned after the President had recently indicated his support for enhanced background checks and “red flag” laws.
