According to ABC 7 Amarillo, the sign has gone viral on social media, even more than just through shares from McCallie's post.

Of course, as you can see, Burkett is the company that owns the sign, and apparently, they had no problem in taking money to have the sign put up, but when the sign drew major attention, they decided to be politically correct.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports:

Randy Burkett, who owns Burkett Outdoor Advertising and the sign, told McClatchy that after all the backlash and media attention the sign got on Tuesday and Wednesday, it would be taken down immediately.

"I was shocked that it traveled that fast," Burkett said. "I believe in free speech, but this country is divided enough as it is. I've spoken with the client, and he's agreed that it should come down. We'll be reimbursing him."

He said that the client who bought the advertising space was an individual, not an organization. The sudden surge of web traffic crashed the Burkett Outdoor Advertising website Wednesday morning.

So, they are going to do something a little different and promote a welcoming sign.

USA Today reports:

A spokesperson for Burkett Media of Austin, Texas told USA TODAY that company is unaffiliated with the content on the billboard.

On Wednesday, a GoFundMe promising to create a billboard with a welcoming message along I-40 reached its goal of $1,800.

The campaign says the billboard will say, "Texas is for everyone--not for bigotry. Welcome, y'all!"

No word was given as to whether or not the person or persons who paid for the sign will be getting their money back or not.

As for McCallie, while he received many negative comments, overall, commenters seemed to agree with the message, and he says he agrees with the sign's message too.

I'm sure other Texans do as well.

The controversy of the sign comes just over a month of another sign in Maryland going viral that read, “Hey liberals, Better get your guns if you try to impeach President Trump. From all of your deplorables in Calvert County.”
