Song Writer On Gun Control: “We Need To Make Some Sacrifices To Our Freedoms”

I can recall as a kid and young man hearing the very smooth voice of singer/song writer James Taylor as he would sing hits like “Handy Man,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” “Shower the People,” and “Carolina in My Mind.” Coming from the Carolinas I suppose made him something of a legend in this area. However, I will note he was from the most liberal part of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Following his performance at Barack Obama’s second inauguration the 64 year old entertainer spoke about gun control, stating “…we need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms.”

While Taylor has a First Amendment right to suggest such a thing, what I find very telling in comments such as his is that he acknowledges that the Second Amendment is about “freedom” and he states that sacrifices to freedom are needed in order to, as Taylor put it, “safeguard our children.” These are not American comments, but rather anti-American comments.

Taylor, in an interview with The Daily Caller said, ““I think the nation is very divided on gun control, but I think the majority of us feel strongly — even the majority of gun owners feel strongly — that we need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms, if that’s the way to put it. We need to make some sacrifices to what we might want to have, in order to safeguard our children.”

“I think there’s a limit to how much,” Taylor continued, “I think the founding fathers wanted us to be able to arm ourselves, but I don’t think that they would have agreed that we should have the capacity to do the damage that we do have. And we just can’t afford it.”

Taylor gives voice to the very people the founding fathers he reference spoke about. Ben Franklin would point to men like Taylor and declare, as he wrote,

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Taylor is one, like many today who is willing to give up freedom for what he thinks will bring him and “the children” safety and security, but he will get neither, nor does he deserve it.

He also went on to say how much he loves Barack Obama, declaring “I think he’s a true public servant. An amazingly capable and compassionate and intelligent man and a very level-headed citizen.”

I have to ask if that compassion and level-headedness Taylor speaks of has been in force when he has attacked the Christian heritage of our country, when he demonizes his opponents, when he orders the assassinations of American citizens by drones or the deaths of untold hundreds of innocent people in foreign lands by drones, including children.

However, Taylor doesn’t stop there. No, the man believes that there should be more like Obama and that he thinks we are “fortunate” to have Obama as our leader.

There is not doubt in my mind that other people in America are thinking just like Taylor and because of that mindset are not worthy of the freedom they enjoy that was granted to them under the Constitution. Also, before you blow people like James Taylor, Beyonce, and Jay-Z off remember that these people greatly influence many of the young people and adults in our culture. As Damon of Athens, a contemporary of Plato, wrote:

“Let me write the songs of a nation, and I care not who writes its laws.”

Taylor has performed before Obama’s first inauguration in 2009, during the Democrat National Convention in Charlotte, NC back in September 2012 and then again this year at the Second inauguration of Obama. Obama also presented him with a National Medal of Arts in 2011.
