Schumer: We're At A Tipping Point On Gun Control

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) appeared on CBS' Face the Nation on Sunday and declared that the shooting that took place at Newtown, Connecticut, "could be the tipping point” in advancing gun control in Congress."

Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer asked, “Where do you see this going?”

The Senator said, "“Well I think we could be at a tipping point for two reasons: a tipping point where we might actually get something done. First, this was not a single incident. It followed a series of others. In the last few months, we’ve had mass shootings in Oregon and Wisconsin and Colorado."

“When the public sees these as isolated incidents, they’re less upset than when they occur one after the other, and the public will not accept, the public will not accept as a new normal one of these incidents every month – these mass shootings,” Schumer said.

“Second," the Senator continued, "of course, it involved children, and it’s so poignant to see those pictures, and I read the story in the newspaper where the families waited in the firehouse, and when they found that a young child had survived, they called the parents out, and there were other parents waiting. What agony! What horror! So I think we can get something done.”

Schumer is one that supports Dianne Feinstein's assault weapons ban bill that would ban certain weapons and limit magazines to only 10 bullets, which they claim would make it "harder for mentally unstable people to get guns." Obviously no one can tell us how banning one set of guns versus another and limiting the number of rounds a gun can carry at once will make it harder for anyone to get guns. This is merely an emotional argument.

“I think we have to do things that protect the Second Amendment rights of legitimate gun owners, but three things that we should focus on: We don’t know the details yet, so you can’t say that any of them would have stopped this incident, but you can say they are parts of the pattern,” Schumer said.

“One is to ban assault weapons, to try and reinstate the assault weapons ban," he said. "The second is to limit the size of clips to maybe no more than 10 bullets per clip. And the third would be to make it harder for mentally unstable people to get guns. Each has had something to do with these other incidents – obviously assault weapons."

Schumer added, “The clips – you may remember when Jared Loughner in the Gabby Giffords shooting tried to reload. That’s when he was tackled. And it seems most of the people who were involved had mental instability. So those are the three areas that I think we will focus on, and I’m hopeful that there can be some kind of change.”

Senator Schumer, not only has a concealed carry permit, but look at the kind of weapon he fires. I'll bet to the liberals this could be considered an "assault weapon."
As with anything assault weapons are not the issue and neither is high capacity magazines. Again, how can one "protect Second Amendment rights of legitimate gun owners" and yet keep them form obtaining weapons that would, as the Second Amendment read, allow them to form a "well regulated militia." You don't do that by not having access to rifles currently on the market.

Liberals merely react emotionally, just as many react, especially when children are involved. Were any of the shootings emotional during 2012? Of course, but our response, when it comes to law, should not be. Mr. Schumer, you are forgetting something, criminals don't follow your laws! Ban every gun by law and see who has them and who uses them. All that blood is on your hands, not ours. Stop creating "Gun Free Zones" as though criminals will see those and think, "Yeah I should obey the law." Stop encroaching on the rights of the people and start giving the criminals true justice.
