Dean Smith, the chairman of the Georgetown County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, resigned last week after being caught destroying people’s Trump 2020 signs.
The accusation of property damage, trespassing, and sign theft were made against the Democrat official after a resident caught him on video stealing his Trump yard signs.
The video was given to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office last week after a Pawleys Island resident set up a deer camera to try and find out who kept stealing his Trump signs. Eventually, the camera recorded Smith coming onto the man’s property and taking away the campaign signs.
Police identified both Dean L. Smith and his wife, Rita, along with their automobile from the video.
Smith sent a letter apologizing for his “lapse of judgment.”
I regret that a brief lapse in judgement (sic) on my part might become a distraction to the conduct of this very important election. Therefore, I hereby resign from this Board effective immediately. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with all of you. I am very proud of the 15 years I have been involved in Georgetown County elections and am sorry that it has to end like this.
Smith, whose term was set to expire on Dec. 1 of this year, ultimately decided to resign from the board on Oct. 14.
