Republican Congressman Drops Bombshell When Asked about Trey Gowdy as Majority Leader

Following the announcement of resignation by John Boehner (R-OH), Representative Trey Gowdy‘s (R-SC) name was floated as a possible leader in the House of Representatives. However, one congressman dropped a bombshell about Gowdy when asked about his potential nomination.

Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) appeared on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” and said that Gowdy would be retiring after his term in Congress.

“Trey wants to go back to South Carolina, and God bless him for that,” he said.

When asked if that was what Gowdy told him, Fleming said, “At the end of his term, yes. He plans to go back home, and he wants to finish his work on the Benghazi special committee. But he loves South Carolina and he loves his family, and he wants to go back and spend the rest of his life there.”

According to Gowdy Communications Director Amanda Duvall, “He has not made any announcement on 2016.”

Also, the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party tweeted:

As for who Rep. Fleming would like to see run for the Speaker position, he mentioned Jim Jordan (R-OH), but said he was reluctant to run.

Fleming says that many congressmen “live in their offices” because they “can’t afford two households.” So, he understands why they want to return home.

While Gowdy’s communication director claims that he has not made a decision regarding 2016, we know that Gowdy has said with his own mouth that he doesn’t want to stay in Washington.

On Tuesday, however, Fleming apologized for his comments.

“I’ve apologized to Trey privately for having misspoken on his future plans, but wanted to make this apology public,” Fleming, R-Minden,  said in a statement. “After speaking with him, I do believe that he will be running for re-election. I know Trey intends to fulfill his work on the Select Committee, which may extend beyond this Congress.”

Fleming praised Gowdy “for the yeoman’s work he’s doing for the good of our country as chairman of the Select Committee on Benghazi.”

Time will tell, but at least for now, there are some questions as to whether or not the South Carolina representative will seek another term in the US Congress. I’m still wondering if Gowdy will ever bring any resolve to Benghazi or the various other scandals that committees which he sits on are investigating.
