The Public Killing of Miriam Carey – Was It Really Murder?

Was it murder, what happened 6 months ago in D.C.? It was Oct. 3, 2013 when U.S. Capitol Police officers and uniformed Secret Service agents shot Miriam Carey in the back of the head. You may recall that first they called her a terrorist threat, but she turned out to be an unarmed suburban mother with a baby in the backseat of her car. Then they said she was on drugs. However, this week we have learned, without a trace of doubt, that was wrong too.

Miriam strapped her daughter into the backseat of her car and drove from her home in Connecticut to Washington. Upon arriving, she apparently made a wrong turn into a White House entrance, tried to leave, was chased by heavily armed officers and ultimately shot dead by police in the very shadow of the Capitol. Why she was killed is a mystery to this day because, according to the initial police report, she never crashed a security gate or a barrier – though media reports claimed she had. She simply tried to make a U-turn and leave. Yet, uniformed Secret Service agents and U.S. Capitol Police officers tried to stop her from leaving, then hunted her down and shot her to death. To this day, a half-year later, no one knows why.

Police protocol states that a moving vehicle is not a deadly instrument, so Carey would be legally considered both unarmed and not a threat. Nonetheless, she was shot and killed by officers. When Representative James Moran (D-V) asked Capital Police Chief Dines if officers should have shot at the tires rather than the driver – especially considering Carey was unarmed and had her baby in the backseat of her car – the chief responded, “[t]here’s a lot of opinions out there, but most of them are wrong and uneducated.” But the real question is was it murder?

I recently began a new sermon series at my church titled, “The Road to Jerusalem.” We are stepping into the Gospel account given to us by Luke as we retrace the footsteps of Jesus in the last weeks of His life here on earth. Luke 18:31-34 explains, “Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.” What Jesus was sharing with His disciples was not what they wanted to hear. But it appears they understood what the end result of this trip would mean.

When government agents kill someone, the common assumption often made that such a homicide is perfectly justified. They convince us that we cannot and must not question their actions. They are above the accountability required of everyone else. But the truth of the matter is that they accountable to God, and His law is the standard by which they will ultimately be judged, whether they participated in the murder six months ago of Miriam Carey or the murder of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was the greatest miscarriage of justice the world has ever known. This was a murder using human civil government as a cloak by which to conduct a judicial murder of Jesus, our Messiah. It is an injustice that was the greatest act of treachery and treason this world has ever witnessed.

We are witnesses to innumerable injustices in our land today as it plunges into the sea of wickedness, but the murder of Jesus has no comparison. The only person to ever walk this earth that was perfectly innocent, never having sinned in word, thought or deed – having always been perfectly obedient to not only the clear commands of God’s Word, but also the individual direction of His life. He did the Father’s will perfectly in everything. We know Romans 6:23 states that the wages of sin is death. Therefore our Father in Heaven could put all sinners to death for their sins. He only gives human civil government a limited list of crimes for which someone can be executed. Only Jesus was perfectly innocent and He died not for any sins which He had done, but for our sin. Jesus submitted to this murder in order to procure our salvation. Will you submit to Him?
