Public Education Responsible for Obama’s Crusade Comments and Flaws in Foreign Policy

President Obama is one of many modern presidents whose foreign policy has disappointed because of flawed educational policies and political correctness. Once educational systems stopped teaching the basic tenets of the major religions and how those tenets shaped a nations government and social institutions, the quality of America’s foreign policy was weakened. A comprehensive analysis of religions and their role in shaping social and political ideologies has been lost, in part, to political correctness, thus rendering our nation unwilling to face the truth and incapable of adequately protecting its citizens.

President Obama’s statement,  “And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” reveals an ignorance of history that has rendered him less of a foreign policy expert than past presidents such as Thomas Jefferson who dealt with attacks from Muslim pirates.

Knowing the truth about the Crusades should have put this Christian-based nation at an advantage when dealing with Islamic radicals. The Crusades were holy wars fought between Christians in Europe and Muslims in the Middle East between 1095 and 1291. In 1065, Jerusalem was taken by the Turks and 3000 Christians were massacred, starting a chain of events which contributed to the cause of the crusades. The Byzantines, who were Christian, lost control of their lands. The Byzantine emperor asked the Christians in Europe to help protect his empire from the Turks. In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a crusade against the Muslims to regain control of Jerusalem.

The battle over control of Jerusalem continues today as part of the conflict with Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS, and others. This connection is rarely used in current negotiations which weakens the authenticity of America’s stand on the issue. The fact that Christian nations have evolved by creating less barbaric approaches to deal with these issues and that the Islamic terrorists are still using brutal methods to fulfill a barbaric goal should be a persuasive tool when negotiating with these terrorists.

Many of our founders and many early presidents benefitted from an educational system that taught the tenets of major religions and afforded a comprehensive study of governments. Their writings show they chose to create a Constitutional Republic based on Judeo-Christian principles because history proved these to be the most peaceful and prosperous forms of government. Shortly after landing at Plymouth Rock, our founders created a publically funded educational system that would provide all citizens with an understanding of religion and the study of governments.

The benefits from analyzing religions and the governments they shape aided early presidents who also dealt with Muslim conflicts. Thomas Jefferson’s team successfully negotiated the Treaty of Tripoli with Muslim pirates who were attacking our merchant ships and enslaving the crew members. Religion was used by pirates to justify their attacks. The controversial Article 11 of the treaty explains that
the government of the United States of America is not founded on the Christian Religion only because it has no enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility of Muslim nations.

The treaty also explains that America has never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Muslim nation. The treaty declared that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

The fact that the discussion of religious tenets played a role in addressing these grievances exemplifies the need for American children, America’s future leaders, to understand and respect the role religions play in shaping governments and social institutions.

When political correctness prohibits the truth of the Crusades, the Treaty of Tripoli, terrorist acts, or the history of the caliphate to be discussed on a factual basis, the ability of nations to find the path to peace is lost.

It is essential that future educational standards include the requirement to provide a fact-based curriculum which prepares future leaders to apply the lessons of history and the role religions play in those conflicts. This knowledge is essential for modern leaders to appeal to the conscience of groups such as ISIS. It affords citizens the wisdom needed to intellectually support or reject said foreign policy. Man’s morality is revealed and defined in the tenets of their religion including the religion of secularism. Leaders who lack the educational foundation to recognize this fact place their nations in peril.
