Pro-Life Community Calls for Democrat Reversal on Abortion

USA Today published an interesting op-ed on abortion recently. The piece voiced concerns from both sides of the aisle about the Democrat Party’s trajectory on the abortion issue.

The piece was penned by conservative Christian leader Russell D. Moore, who is the chief ethicist at the Southern Baptist Convention, and Michael Wear who is a long-time Democrat operative that has spent years working in the Obama White House. The two men have wildly different ideas about the best way to run our nation and to lead our people, but on the issue of abortion, they’ve found common ground and are both calling the Democrat Party to turn back from its extreme pro-abortion platform.

The op-ed they’ve written focuses in on the recent decision by the DNC to oppose the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal tax dollars for funding abortions. While the Democrats have long bristled at Republican attempts to restrain government funding of abortion, they’ve also mostly voiced support for the Hyde Amendment… that ostensible support is gone now. This turn in the Democrat Party’s stance against pro-life America has both men, one a conservative the other a staunch liberal, very worried.

Here’s some of what they had to say:

A well-publicized part of the Democratic Party platform draft is its opposition to the death penalty, which contradicts the views of presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. But there is a less noticed change that, if accepted by convention delegates, would be a far more radical departure. For the first time, the Democratic Party would call for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits direct use of federal funds for abortion…

Such a call would mean repudiation not only of Americans who are conscientiously pro-life, but also of those who are pro-choice and still morally conflicted about abortion. That would include those who would agree with Vice President Biden, who said in the 2012 vice presidential debate, “Life begins at conception. That’s the church’s judgment. I accept it in my personal life. But I refuse to impose it on equally devout Christians and Muslims and Jews.”

As taxpayers, our money goes toward all kinds of things we do not personally support. It is part of living in a pluralistic society. Even so, for 40 years, our government and our people have decided to respect abortion as a unique moral issue. The Democrats should reverse course and remove opposition to Hyde from their platform. Wherever you stand on abortion, forcing people to pay for it can’t be good for Democrats, or for democracy.

Moore and Wear are exactly right, but honestly, it’s a bit naïve to think that, just because their platform wasn’t explicitly calling for the repeal of the Hyde Amendment, most liberal Democrats weren’t already against it. The Democrats have been led by men and women who are virulently pro-abortion for the last two decades – Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Boxer, Harry Reid, Joe Biden, John Kerry… these people are all abortion extremists. They believe that abortion should be legally protected, right up until the moment the child fully emerges from the women’s body. Most of them argue that, while they are personally opposed (because of religious beliefs), they feel that it is wrong to force a woman to not kill her child. But it’s not just religion that tells us abortion is wrong. Science has proven that the unborn child is a wholly separate, living, feeling, thinking human being long before it is ever actually born. So, the Democrat argument today essentially defends murder for convenience.

While I applaud Moore and Wear for speaking out, they’d be foolish to believe that the Democrat Party would stop its assault on children. As long as children “inconvenience” their voters/donors, the Democrats will support their murder.
