Citizens of The Beaver State must surely be thinking to themselves, “oh, not again”.
Portland, Oregon has become the de facto harbinger of political violence in recent months as the radical left consistently runs rampant through the city. The most notorious of these well-organized and violent groups is Antifa – a group whose savage behavior has become a focal point in America’s current political upheaval. The organization has even garnered “domestic terrorist” status in states such as New Jersey after a series of brutal incidents have rocked the country.
In Portland, Antifa has found a safe haven, assaulting journalists such as Andy Ngo with little to no repercussions.
As the weekend dawns over The Rose City, another round of violence seems almost inevitable.
Incidents involving hate speech and divisive rhetoric have been on the rise in America. Portland aims to be ready for any protesters who get out of hand, Mayor Ted Wheeler said Friday on “Outnumbered Overtime.”
“I’m confident that from a law enforcement perspective, we’re going to have all the tools and the resources and personnel we need,” he said.
The Mayor’s responses lacked cognizance of the threat posed by Antifa.
Wheeler mentioned white supremacists and neo-Nazi protesters as representative of a major flashpoint. “They’re coming to Portland because they know there will be a conflict,” he said.
In response, Francis asked the mayor why he didn’t mention Antifa protesters as well. He reiterated that police will be prepared to deal with any violent outbursts.
While hate of all stripes must always be condemned, the lack of acknowledgment of Antifa’s role in previous episodes of violence relays the local government’s blind eye toward the ultra-liberal and wildly radical organization.
