Perhaps, People Should Seriously Consider This Constitutionalist for Speaker of the House

Outgoing Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) has said he will be resigning at the end of the month. This has led to many pushing for their particular political star. Among those have been Kevin McCarthy, who has recently pulled out of his bid at the seat after a stupid comment he made about the Benghazi committee, former Texas Congressman Ron Paul, Former Speaker Newt Gingrich and even not so mathematically brilliant 2012 VP losing candidate Paul Ryan (R-WI), whose freedom index voting record is worse than McCarthy’s. However, not many people have mentioned Congressman Justin Amash (R-MI), who is a staunch Constitutionalist and representative of the people in his district.

Amash is somewhat quiet in the spotlight. He isn’t looking for accolades, but does his duty, serving the people of his district with integrity. He is known for posting his vote and the reason for it on Facebook, realizing that he is accountable to the people who elected him. He does this without being asked and is open to be questioned regarding his stance on any issue.

In a recent post at The Week, Bonnie Kristian listed five reasons why Justin Amash should be considered to be the next Speaker of the House:

  1. Amash is a stickler for House rules who has never missed a vote
  2. Amash personally explains every vote he casts on his Facebook page
  3. Amash would make time for lawmakers to actually read the bills they pass
  4. Amash represents a new generation of Republicans — literally
  5. John Boehner does not like him

This is a man that has never missed a vote, something that he was elected to do, be the voice of the people. How’s that for integrity? In fact, when the House was debating the PATRIOT Act during the spring, Amash watched over what took place to ensure nothing else was getting stuffed into the tyrannical legislation that would infringe upon the American people’s liberties. And yes, he opposes the PATRIOT Act as unconstitutional.

Amash opposes undeclared wars (something the Constitution says must be done before the military is to be used), unwarranted mass surveillance of American citizens, and even voted against the Keystone Pipeline, something he agrees with in theory, but voted against because of unconstitutional benefits that would be given to a corporation that were unconstitutional.

Rep. Amash believes representative should read what they vote on and has backed resolutions to that effect. He has even voted “present,” rather than “yes” or “no” when either he was not given time to review the bill, procedural/constitutional concerns on legislation with desirable end, or a conflict of interest.

The 35-year-old congressman is also an Eastern Orthodox Christian of Syrian descent, who provides a different perspective from the establishment types like Ryan, Boehner and McCarthy, and much of that perspective is good. Some of it needs refining.

He does have some controversial issues for some over the legalization of marijuana and the issue of marriage. Though he says he believes in traditional marriage, it does appear that Amash has had some change in his view. While I tend to agree with him about legalization of something that grows because God made it, I find myself in disagreement with him concerning the issue of marriage, which is a huge issue, as he tweeted, “Real threat to traditional marriage & religious liberty is government, not gay couples who love each other & want to spend lives together.” Without getting off point, government can definitely be a threat to both of the things mentioned, but it is holding government to the standard God has set which is important, and as I’ve stated time and again, sodomites don’t love each other, they “dishonour their own bodies between themselves” (Rom. 1:24). That’s not love and that’s why sodomy was considered a capital crime not only in the Bible, but in the founding of the States of our Union. This is one area he needs correcting on. Frankly, I don’t see how that is compatible with his Christian worldview.

I do think Justin Amash is correct to eliminate the issue of marriage at the federal level. It is not within their jurisdiction. However, to open that up to practicing sodomites is something completely different, even if it is at the state level. This is something he needs to be corrected on. For the States are to govern according to the dictates of the Bible, looking to it for law. Our forefathers did that. Sadly, that concept has been abandoned.

Justin Amash has warned the American people that if they could read the classified documents, they would have been even more against the war in Syria which has only enabled America’s enemies.

Amash has taken strong stands against Boehner in the past and voted against his re-election, which led to his removal of his Budget committee seat. He has even told Boehner that he is not welcome in Michigan because he is not doing a good job. He has also stood for the Fourth Amendment and against the NSA’s unconstitutional spying.
