One God – One Law

The past week I had to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my driver’s license. As I stood in that first line, a rather long line itself, I had the distinct impression I was in a foreign country. The language I heard all around was not English. The greatest jab was as the announcements were made regarding the next available agent, some of those were not in English either. I don’t know how it was determined that there was someone who could not speak a lick of English, but nonetheless was being granted a driver’s license.

Then the final jolt was in the process itself. You are repeatedly asked if you would like to register to vote. Never any question about whether you are a citizen of this country, never a question regarding whether you are legally in this country. In fact I noticed the way the procedures were structured – the easy route – the default mode was to register to vote. I had to repeatedly decline the invitation because I am already registered to vote. This illustrated to me that Maryland has set up a process to sweep in countless numbers of illegal aliens to the voting rolls – which no doubt will increase the ongoing theft from the producing citizens of Maryland. That theft currently transfers $1.5 billion each year to illegals in Maryland.

When it comes to the subject of illegal immigration to our land, there are a large number of Christians standing on opposite sides of debate. There are those who would tell us what Jesus would have us do is to welcome illegals with open arms. In fact, we should help them navigate the bureaucracy so they can obtain a green card status and move on the rolls towards citizenship. This includes showing them all the welfare benefits they can obtain in that process of obtaining their green card and beyond. They would say this is the best way to be able to share the gospel of our Lord and Savior with them. This argument no doubt proves very attractive to many believers.

On the opposite bank stands what some would characterize as the Law and Order Christians who say we should communicate the gospel to the lost, which requires us to point out their sins. This would include the sin of breaking into a country in violation of the law and using a system of legalized plunder, known as welfare, all of which God’s Law clearly spells out as sin. Then we should call them to repentance and saving faith in Jesus Christ. That repentance, by the way, is demonstrated in the actions of making restitution to those whom you have broken in and stolen from.

As you can see the divide between these two camps is sharp and steep. Does the Word of God have anything to say to this issue? Are there any guidelines, which could help in the formulation of a just immigration policy? Turn to Exodus 12:43 – 48 to learn about the question of who is a Foreigner?

And the Lord said unto Moses and Aaron, This is the ordinance of the passover: There shall no stranger eat thereof: But every man’s servant that is bought for money, when thou hast circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof. A foreigner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof. In one house shall it be eaten; thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house; neither shall ye break a bone thereof. All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee, and will keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be as one that is born in the land: for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

We see that the question regarding who was native born and circumcised or became a member of the covenanted community through circumcision had a special status, the privilege of partaking of Passover. We find in the Old Testament that there is a sharp distinction between the native born (what we might call a citizen) and those who were outside the covenant. The former had many responsibilities, which the latter did not. Only citizens were ably to participate in the congregation of the assembly – which meant all the political functions of society, such as voting, serving on a jury, being elected to hold public office, serving as a member of the militia and so on. Though we haven’t answered the immigration question, what we have done is laid the foundation to answer the question. There is One God, the God of the Bible. There is One Law, His Law given to us in His Word.
