As Congress continues to grill acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire over his involvement with what has become quite the whistleblower scandal, freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has quite a different message.
Ocasio-Cortez has been highly outspoken in her criticisms of Presdient Trump, often going well out of her way to find new ways in which to disparage The Donald. Now, in the onset of a nasty impeachment battle against the Commander in Chief, it should come as no surprise that the Congresswoman has again found herself on her soapbox.
Ocasio-Cortez was speaking Wednesday on CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time when she described the inquiry as an “urgent action.”
“We have the opportunity to act now to prevent a profoundly destabilizing action and intervention in our democracy before it happens,” she said. “And I think that is a profoundly urgent action that we need to take right now.”
Ocasio-Cortez said that previous House investigations into Trump have tended to focus on alleged past actions.
“When it comes to Ukraine we are talking about a potential meddling in the 2020 election that has still yet to happen.”
This insinuation is somewhat troubling, however, as it implies that Congress supersede the control mechanisms already put into place for this sort of issue.
Of course Americans want the elections to be fair and free of meddling, but what AOC is suggesting has been seen by many as a “pre-crime” initiative, at least until such a time as Congress has made their determination regarding the actions of this President in regard to the current whistleblower scandal.
