Obama’s Biggest Mistake: Putting Policy Over Storytelling

In an interview on Thursday with “CBS This Morning” anchor Charlie Rose, Barack, and Michelle Obama discussed the failures and successes of his administration. In the midst of the conversation, Obama told Rose that he believes his biggest mistake has been putting policy over storytelling.

Well I’m sure many people were shocked at that, since we have basically found out that his “biography”, Dreams of My Father, is basically one big story, as in fabrication.

“When I think about what we’ve done well and what we haven’t done well,” the president said, “the mistake of my first term – couple of years – was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that’s important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times.”

The nature of the office is to tell a story to the American people? No, the nature of the office of the President of the United States is to uphold and defend the Constitution by enforcing the law as the nation’s chief executive. This is something that Barack Obama has failed miserably at. He has demonstrated this most recently in his utter disregard for the rule of law concerning the issue of immigration among many other things.

His stories also have been the source of division in our country, not unity. Just recall when Obama had to have a “Beer Summit” to smooth things over because of his racial stereotyping in his comments. He did the same thing in the Trayvon Martin case. He pits black against white, Hispanic against white, and rich against poor. The man is not out after unity, but conquering through dividing.

He also mentioned the fact that people thought he was a good orator, but wondered whether he could handle the job. I actually believe he can’t handle the job and his oratory skills are found wanting. People may think he is a good speaker because of the inflection of his voice or possible a few things he says, but the fact that he has had speech writers is more than likely partly responsible. Take the man off the teleprompter and he loses his ability to hold a thought together and even to answer a question.

“It’s funny – when I ran, everybody said, well he can give a good speech but can he actually manage the job?” he said. “And in my first two years, I think the notion was, ‘Well, he’s been juggling and managing a lot of stuff, but where’s the story that tells us where he’s going?’ And I think that was a legitimate criticism.”

When Rose pressed Obama on what he felt he needed to explain better, he said that he wanted to do more “explaining, but also inspiring.”

“Because hope is still there,” Mrs. Obama added.

Let’s hope not (pun intended). It’s hard to inspire people when you are running around trying to cover for your Attorney General who has been found in contempt of Congress. It’s hard to inspire when you have just had your signature piece of legislation defined as a massive tax increase. The unemployment rate continues to sit above eight percent, jobs are leaving the country, inflation is settling in, we are engaged in constant apologies to enemies of our country and he thinks that more storytelling will be inspiring? Give me a break.

Mr. Obama seems to have only inspired certain people because of the claims that he is the first black president. The color of one’s skin does not inspire most Americans. What inspires people is that you leave them alone to do what they do best and that is live free. You inspire the American people by putting forth policy where the government isn’t in every single thing they do. You inspire them by letting them keep more of their hard earned money, and yes even the rich, rather than taxing them to death at every turn. You inspire the people by respecting your oath of office and the U.S. Constitution. You inspire the American people by being a good president.

These things will never happen in an Obama administration and the reason is that Barack Hussein Obama is not interested in inspiring the American people. He’s interested in telling stories, fictitious stories, rather than actually giving anyone hope or inspiring one person.
