Obamacare Taxes Have Arrived & Republicans Need to Stop Them

The 60 Plus Association released a new ad this week as part of their seven-figure ad campaign to blast the dreaded Health Insurance Tax (HIT), a $21 billion tax that is expected to increase premium costs. The tax went into effect Jan. 1.

Although Republicans were able to repeal the Obamacare individual mandate in the latest tax reform package, there are still vestiges of the big government healthcare legislation that remain.

Republicans still have a big job ahead of them in the healthcare fight. Among the top priorities are the tax issues such as the medical device tax and health insurance tax, ill-advised taxes put in place to help pay for the massive government expansion under Obamacare.

This Obamacare tax has managed to survive so far despite polling showing that most voters think Congress should stop it.

“The 2018 Health Insurance Tax is driving up health care costs for seniors and it’s unacceptable,” said 60 Plus Association Chairman and Founder Jim Martin. “Congress needs to act now, roll back this tax, and get those rebate checks into the hands of seniors.”

On the Medical Device tax, the Advanced Medical Technology Association has been fighting to have it repealed. They applauded a recent bill from the Problem Solvers Caucus to repeal the tax.

“We commend Reps. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) – along with the rest of the Problem Solvers Caucus – for highlighting the need to repeal the medical device tax as part of their solution to the challenges facing the U.S. health care system,” said Scott Whitaker, AdvaMed President and CEO. “This is a tax on innovation, a tax on jobs, and a tax on the health and well-being of millions of American patients. It makes no sense from either a health care or a tax policy perspective, which is why bipartisan majorities for years in both the House and Senate have called for this tax to be repealed.”

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), estimated that HIT will cost $12.3 billion in taxes next year and $145 billion over the next ten years.

“The health insurance tax directly impacts as many as 1.7 million small businesses, 11 million households that purchase through the individual insurance market, and 23 million households covered through their jobs,” Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist wrote in an op-ed for The Hill. “The National Federation of Independent Business estimates the tax could cost up to 286,000 in new jobs and cost small businesses $33 billion in lost sales by 2023.”

A study from the Winston group found the majority of Americans support action to stop the tax, which is expected to raise premiums by 2.6 percent on top of the already soaring premiums under Obamacare.

“It’s time to stop punishing seniors,” said Martin. “Congress needs to immediately halt this Obamacare remnant and provide Medicare Advantage enrollees with some much needed tax relief.”

The transcript of the HIT ad is below:

“With the volume of news we hear today, sometimes important messages don’t get through.”

“If you’re a senior on Medicare Advantage, you’re going to pay even more for healthcare than you thought – because of the new 2018 health insurance tax on your Medicare.”

“The good news is – you can get your money back.”

“If Congress acts now, seniors with Medicare Advantage can get a $500 per couple rebate.”

“But first, Congress must roll back the 2018 health insurance tax.”

“Call Congress. Make sure they get the message that you want your Medicare health insurance tax rebate – now.”
