It is rather ironic that Barack Obama would hold an Iftar Dinner at the White House with a room full of Muslims and declare, “Of all the freedoms we cherish as Americans, of all the rights that we hold sacred, foremost among them is freedom of religion, the right to worship as we choose." This comes just as his signature healthcare mandate's demand that even religious institutions provide abortions, contraceptives and sterilizations free of charge even though their would have to violate their religious conscience to do so. The regulation took effect August 1, 2012. Many lawsuits have been filed against it.
“It’s enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution--the law of the land, always and forever,” Obama continued. “It beats in our heart--in the soul of the people who know that our liberty and our equality is endowed by our Creator.”
One wonders how much Barack Obama cares about the law of the land when his own administration will not uphold the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) or the Immigration laws of the land.
Interestingly enough the First Amendment says absolutely nothing about the "right to worship as we choose." What it does state is:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Not once in his entire speech, at a dinner which was in part an Islamic celebration being endorsed by the President of the United States as part of Ramadan, did he mention what the First Amendment actually teaches and that is that the federal government is not to create any law regarding the establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise of that religion.
I'm wondering where all the liberals are and ACLU on this. Here, in the highest office in the land is Barack Obama participating in a religious festival at taxpayer's expense with Muslims in the people's house. Who would have thought? Even the founders would be rolling over in their graves at this!
Contrast Obama's words though with his health care program and ask yourself if he really believes what he is shoveling? I would say he doesn't not.
The Roman Catholic Church has filed several lawsuits because, in effect, in implementing Obamacare Obama has done the exact opposite of what the First Amendment protects against. We are seeing clearly now that the Constitution is not being followed at all and that the consciences of many religious organizations are being challenged.
In June, the U.S. Catholic bishops unanimously adopted a statement explaining this fact and condemning the regulation as an “unjust and illegal mandate” that violates “personal civil rights.”
“The HHS mandate creates still a third class, those with no conscience protection at all: individuals who, in their daily lives, strive constantly to act in accordance with their faith and moral values,” said the unanimous Catholic bishops. “They, too, face a government mandate to aid in providing ‘services’ contrary to those values—whether in their sponsoring of, and payment for, insurance as employers; their payment of insurance premiums as employees; or as insurers themselves—without even the semblance of an exemption. This, too, is unprecedented in federal law, which has long been generous in protecting the rights of individuals not to act against their religious beliefs or moral convictions.”
Since May, numerous Catholic institutions and business owners have filed federal lawsuits against the Obama administration, arguing that the regulation violates the First Amendment. The plaintiffs include, among others, the Archdiocese of New York, the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the University of Notre Dame , Catholic University of America, the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), O’Brien Industrial Holdings (a Missouri-based group of ceramics companies), and Hercules Industries (a Colorado-based heating, ventilation and air-conditioning business.)
Notre Dame summarized the issue clearly in its lawsuit filed against HHS Secretary Sebelius, Treasury Secretary Timoth Geithner and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.
Some of the important lines from the Notre Dame lawsuit that make the point are as follows:
“The Free Exercise Clause protects organizations as well as individuals from Government-imposed burdens on religious exercise.
Abortifacients, sterilization, and contraception violate the Catholic beliefs and tenets to which Notre Dame must adhere to according to the Church’s magisterial teachings and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
“Notre Dame’s religious beliefs preclude it from offering health care plans to its employees and students that include or facilitate coverage for abortifacients, sterilization, contraception, or related education and counseling about those practices.”
If the Government can force religious institutions to violate their beliefs in such a manner, there is no apparent limit to the Government’s power."
I agree with the lawsuit. However, thanks to the Supreme Court Ruling on Obamacare this year that is just what it determined. The government's power, according to the Supreme Court, seems to be unlimited. Now they can make you buy whatever they like and if you don't buy it you can be taxed. On top of that, you also maybe forced to buy or provide things that would violate your conscience, even though that is supposed to be protected by the same government under the Constitution.Facebook, Google Plus, & Twitter.
