President Obama delivered a speech before the Catholic Health Association on Tuesday in an effort to continue trying to sell his bad Obamacare legislation. The topic of his speech was health care in America and Obamacare. Unsurprisingly his chief tool for persuasion was fear mongering. Speaking of conservatives’ efforts to repeal the socialist healthcare scheme that is wreaking havoc on our economy and that sacrifices the freedom of American consumers on the altar of socialist good intentions, he said,
It seems so cynical to take coverage away from millions of people. To take care away from the people who need it the most. To punish millions with higher cost of care and unravel what has woven into the fabric of America.
His attempts at fear mongering are ironic, because in the very same speech he chastised conservatives for doing the very same thing.
And despite the constant doom and gloom predictions, the unending chicken little warnings that somehow making health insurance fair and easier to buy would lend to the end of freedom, the end of the American way of life, lo and behold it did not happen, none of this came to pass.
Here’s the problem with almost everything that President Obama said in his speech on Tuesday. He is completely and utterly wrong. Just last week, the Washington Examiner wondered if Obamacare would ever actually be able to sign up enough people.
Though the Department of Health of Human Services boasted this week that enrollment in Obamacare is consistent with the administration’s expectations, in reality, it has lagged behind original expectations for the second year in a row. The question is, can enrollment make a quantum leap in 2016 just to catch up?
When Obamacare was passed in March 2010, the Congressional Budget Office had projected that enrollment in the law’s insurance exchanges would grow from 8 million in 2014, to 13 million in 2015, and then jump to 21 million by 2016 (a projection that was reiterated in its most recent report).
But as of now, HHS says that just 10.2 million signed up and paid premiums (which only met HHS’s downwardly revised target). That means that the number of enrollees will have to double next year to meet CBO projections of 21 million.
But if this doesn’t work, and enrollment substantially lags in 2016, insurers could be spooked enough into stepping away form the exchanges, driving up rates even further and placing the program’s sustainability in doubt.
But more than that, Obamacare has been a weight on our economy and killed job creation across the nation. The President appeals to your concern for your neighbors without revealing that Obamacare has been the death knell of millions of jobs from sea to shining sea. Obamacare has done nothing to slow the rise of healthcare costs. To top it all off, Obamacare has actually meant that fewer Americans have insurance than before! This whole socialized healthcare exercise was not only meaningless, it was extremely counterproductive and a waste of billions of dollars.
The “doom and gloom” we conservatives are worried about, Mr. President, has not yet come to pass, but if we stay this course that you and your liberal comrades have charted, it most certainly will. Each new liberal initiative steals more of our money, freedom and responsibility, slowly killing the engine that drives American prosperity. One day your liberal policies will squeeze out the last ounce of American exceptionalism and we will become as stagnant, moribund and unproductive as Europe. That is the road Obamacare is driving us down, and Republicans are no “Chicken Littles” for saying so; we are more like the prophets of old begging the nation to recognize their folly and repent.
I only pray that America listens before it’s too late.Facebook and Twitter, and follow our friends at RepublicanLegion.com.
