Must See: Weatherman Pronounces Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Without a Pause

Every once in a while, there is something that people need to see and hear, and it may even bring a chuckle to hear it. One such thing I recently watched was a weatherman who pronounced a 58-letter village in Wales without breaking a sweat.

Weatherman Liam Dutton was providing weather earlier this week and in referencing weather in the United Kingdom had the overwhelming task of having to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Yes, it is a mouthful. Take a look.

According to Wikipedia, the village on the island of Anglesey in Wales is also known as Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Llanfairpwll and Llanfair PG. In case you are interested, the name means, “Saint Mary’s Church in a hollow of white hazel near the swirling whirlpool of the church of Saint Tysilio with a red cave.”

If you think that the 58-letter village is the longest place name in the world, you would be wrong. The longest place name in the world is the 85-letter Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, which is located in New Zealand.

I had to chuckle as I showed it to my kids and read them what the name means, and added a reference from Night at the Museum 2, “and there was a beetle.” Some of you will get that reference.

The video has gone viral, garnering nearly 2 million views and nearly 20,000 shares on Facebook.

According to ABC, Dutton said he learned Welsh as child, which helped. Ya think? How many people in this audience would want to even attempt to pronounce the name of the village?
