versus Retail Stores

Last week I received an e-mail alert from my friends at More specifically from a subgroup called “MoveOn Civic Action.” Boy, what a pithy name. It has the well-known “MoveOn” moniker, but has been spiced up with “civic,” so we know they’re working for the collective – doing their civic duty. It also has “action,” because… well… Action is good.

Anyway, the alert read:

“In retail, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day are the only two holidays that workers traditionally receive. Now that many stores are choosing to open on Thanksgiving, that break is being taken away, denying retail workers the rare opportunity to spend a holiday with their families. A holiday should not be a luxury for the rich – all workers deserve time to spend with loved ones. We, as consumers, have the power to tell stores not to open on Thanksgiving by staying home. We hereby pledge not to shop on Thanksgiving Day, to show the retail industry that everyone deserves a holiday.”

The e-mail plea ended by stating: “Want to support our work? MoveOn Civic Action is entirely funded by our 8 million members – no corporate contributions, no big checks from CEOs…”

Karl Marx would be proud – using words like “workers” and “the rich.” I’m sure they would’ve liked to use the words proletariat and bourgeoisie, but no doubt 7.9 million of the alertees would not have understood it.

That aside, it seems MoveOn Civic Action has a lot of members. Being able to mobilize and to be financially supported by 8 million members… Walmart should be worried! That’s the type of grassroots organization the Tea Party would envy… if it were the truth, which, not surprisingly, it is not.

You see, the “8 million members” they describe are not members. The “members,” like me, are just a collection of e-mail addresses. The overwhelming majority doesn’t give a dime to their cause of spreading Marxist collectivism.

As is always the case with these lefty groups, the same rich fat cats they publicly preach against fund them, and they know it.

Millionaires and billionaires like Herb and Marion Sandler, Peter Lewis and of course, George Soros donate millions of dollars each year.

Walmart aside; wielding that kind of money, these radical groups have been able to drive an entire political party, the Democrat party, even further left. Don’t believe me? Well, here’s what Eli Pariser, director of MoveOn Political Action said in an e-mail during the 2004 presidential campaign:

“In the last year, grassroots contributors like us gave more than $300 million to the Kerry campaign and the DNC, and prove that the party doesn’t need corporate cash to be competitive. Now it’s our party: we bought it, we own it, and were going to take it back.”

Well that pretty much says it all, doesn’t it?

Naturally, others have signed on to support the cause against the big retailer, such as groups like the “Sierra Club” and “Food and Water Watch.” Now why would environmentalist wacko groups care about Walmart workers? They don’t. It’s just another demonstration that if there is a cause out there that promotes “social justice,” these groups will sign on.

Another supporter of MoveOn’s Thanksgiving effort was Peter Dreier, distinguished professor of politics, and chair of the Urban and Environmental Policy Department at Occidental College. Gee, who is that famous Marxist who also attended Occidental College? Oh, that’s right… Barack Obama. My, what a coincidence.

Even head union thug Richard Trumka is supporting the effort against Walmart. Color me surprised. He said, “It’s a family and women’s issue, an immigrant rights issue, a student issue, an environmental issue and consumer issue.”

Of course, it is, but it certainly isn’t a “want to unionize a gazillion Walmart employees so they must pay dues to your corrupt organization issue.” I know that’s not it.

Look, I feel for the people working in retail who must work nights, weekends and holidays, but last I checked; no one was holding a gun to their heads telling them they had to work at these stores. In this economy, they should be thankful to have a job, and I’ll bet the vast majority are.

We, as patrons can help in that regard. We can help beat back the hatred that the MoveOn’s try to instill in retail employees that somehow the rest of us have shortchanged them.

When you’re out doing your shopping this Christmas season (am I still allowed to say Christmas?), be kind and courteous, thank them and wish them a Merry Christmas. Let them know you appreciate what they do. It does help lift their spirits.
