Morgan Freeman Destroys the Idea that Race has Anything to do with Wealth Distribution

Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was interviewed by CNN’s Don Lemon earlier this year and was asked whether race determined how much wealth one could acquire over the course of their life. Without hesitating, Morgan gave a short, succinct response that presented the truth.

“Do you think that race plays a part in wealth or either a mindset that you can’t…” Lemon began to question as Freeman broke in to clarify, “Today?”

“No,” Freeman replied.

Lemon seemed to offer a hesitant, “You don’t?”

Freeman then delivered the obvious, “You and I, We’re proof. Why would race have anything to do with it? Put your mind to what you want to do and go for that.”

While Morgan Freeman is no conservative, on this issue, he is exactly right.

In fact, one really has to question the use of the term “race” in the first place. Sure, there are a variety of cultures and ethnicities, but there is only one race and that is the human one. We are all of one blood. We all came from the same two people, Adam and Eve. Yet, because we have a wonderful Creator, He saw fit to be diverse in His Creation and so there are a wide variety of characteristics of human beings, yet they all are, in fact, human.

This is one of many reasons why the biblical teaching of Creation is foundational in society. Without it, then all things are permissible as Samuel Judah so eloquently wrote on Friday and men don’t have to be treated equally because there is no authoritative standard for why we should behave in such a fashion.

However, when we consider that we are all made in the image of the invisible God, then we also understand that we are to treat one another as He has commanded.

While we have leaders who are promoting wealth inequality and trying to stir up dissention among blacks and whites, the reality is that those who want to do well should follow some basic principles of Scripture, and these have nothing to do with the color of your skin.

  • Work – Those who do not work, should not eat. (2 Thess. 3:10, 12)
  • Work as unto the Lord. (Eph. 6:5)
  • Stay away from debt – It’s a curse (Deut. 28:15, 43, 44) and a hard taskmaster. (Proverbs 22:7)
  • Take time to rest from your labors. (Exodus 20:8-11)
  • Don’t be responsible for other’s debts. (Proverbs 17:18)
  • Fear the Lord and delight in his commandments. (Ps. 112:1-3)
  • Don’t spend all your money, but lay some up as an inheritance for your children. (Proverbs 13:22)

There is plenty of wisdom in the Bible regarding working and wealth, but none of those things say that a reason a person is either wealthy or poor is due to their skin color.

Additionally, the Scriptures do teach us that godliness is not a means of gain (1 Tim. 6:5-6), nor is it necessarily a sign of favor from God (Luke 16:19-31). In fact, in some instances it can be a great stumbling block to entering the kingdom of God (Matt. 19:23).

The man who is content with what God has given him, whether great or small, is a man who has gained greatly (1 Tim. 6:6).

Though I don’t know that Morgan Freeman would agree with a biblical approach to work and wealth, he is at least correct in pointing out that wealth does not come or go due to the color of one’s skin. However, he has been quoted as saying:

“I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere in life if you don’t listen.”

I agree. I hope others will listen .
