Longing To Be Free

Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations. –James Madison

God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it. –Daniel Webster

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. –Samuel Adams

I always find it interesting that I receive more letters from readers when I simply write about my emotions regarding what is happening in America. When I deliver researched articles that I’ve worked on for weeks, I get letters, but not the volume I get when I write from my heart. When I wrote Real Americans, Decoration Day, and The Christmas Thing, my mailbox was flooded with letters from readers who said I’d struck a chord with them. Those folks, especially those my age, all seem to understand exactly what I mean, but it’s only when I write truly, “from the heart.”

Are You Proud To Be An American?” was published on April 27, 2013, and I received a letter in my mailbox that made me weep. It still makes me weep every time I read it. I asked Shirley, from Wolverhampton, England, if I could share her wonderful heartfelt letter. So, here is the letter I received from a woman in England who longs for freedom, and still looks at America as a shining beacon of liberty.

Dear Kelleigh

Thank you for your recent article. I live in the UK, I am not American, but have always loved the true spirit of what America stands for. I cried when I read your article – “Are you proud to be an American.”

For years I have looked at options to legally come to your country, sadly to no avail. I do not have family, professional qualifications or money to legally enter. There is nothing in me that could just come like millions do ‘illegally.’

So, over the years as history has changed, I’ve watched from afar, still holding on to my American dream, until alas like your beautiful country, something inside vanished, maybe the incentive and desire to come died – the inspiration that somewhere there was a place geographically where the freedom resonated with something in me, to live, to be, with little to no law imposed by man which suffocates and controls the human spirit.

Now I look at America and see what it is becoming, and it may even be worse than the UK in some respects. Yet, still my heart loves the original founding of it. I still love the fact you have talk radio, can write freely, and possess a love of freedom. I dislike those Americans who don’t appreciate what they had, that their ancestors literally died, and left people behind to get there for them.

God Bless you Kelleigh. Whilst our world may be infested by evil, I still see and know people who possess a love of freedom, how things should be, and will write wonderful, yet sad articles about what is happening. They speak out at great expense, and still possess a sense of right. They love God. They still mainly come from America. You still shine in many ways.

With kindest regards to you.

Shirley Edwards

Shirley’s letter brought me to tears knowing that someone in the UK has the heart for liberty, and still looks to our America with a longing for freedom. I wrote back to Shirley because I was so touched by her beautiful note to me. Here’s what I said:

Oh Shirley, you make me weep…my paternal grandfather came here from England in the 1600s…Morse is the name, it was my maiden name. I’m so disturbed at what is happening that I’m bereft of how to encourage my fellow countrymen to fight it. They all seem apathetic. It’s really disheartening. I just pray, and hope that they will see before it’s too late.

Bless you for writing to me…thank you for taking the time. I’m glad to know the article went across the pond to another freedom lover. God be with you!

Here is her missive for us to all be encouraged and to save our America:

Your country is worth fighting for. Please be encouraged Kelleigh. And I believe your grandfather whose ancestors took the journey over would be really proud of you too, as well as God. I just know it.

Keep writing – you have encouraged me also.

God Bless

I sent Shirley part of what I had written, and asked if it was okay to use her full name and city, and here is what she wrote back to me. I want all of my readers to be encouraged because Shirley mentions her friends who feel the same way she does…there are many of us yearning for freedom, liberty, and exemption from external control by ungodly governments.

O Kelleigh, now I am sitting here crying. So unexpected to read this.

It is so true as well that many people responded to your articles written from the heart, because a friend of mine from America also was very moved and wrote to me. Her friend too. We all agreed we wished we were on the farm with your grandfather, right now, carefree and optimistic for the future. (I wrote about my childhood in Are You Proud to Be An American?)
We kind of share a common bond of family values, hard work, honesty and freedom. How things should be. My friends are despairing for America, although optimistic in their faith as well, and all encouraged by those who are speaking out. Nancy is a midwife and has taken a lot of interest in your articles about life issues. Killing Us Softly especially hit a nerve.

The one thing we have discussed is that at some point in our lives we all went off track, went wild, and through suffering, we were pulled back on track by a force that loved us enough to say, “Enough.”

Thank you again Kelleigh. Have a really lovely day today.

Your freedom loving friend over yonder. Shirley

Is America worth fighting for? Is she worth praying for? Is she worth dying to save? We were once the bastion of freedom, the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I see apathetic Americans, most still unaware that we are now a communist country. God blessed this nation, and we have kicked Him out of every single function and entity in the country. All of you know what we have become, what we have lost. I don’t need to continually list the grievances we should have screamed about more than 150 years ago. Evil works slowly to put us into bondage. Is this how we want to live?

It certainly is not what I want for myself or for my descendants. I’m begging you all, please attend your local commission and council meetings, educate yourselves, watch what is happening locally, raise your voices against the unjust laws, codes, zoning, tax increases, destruction of our once wonderful academic education, etc. Get out and be a conscientious citizen! Listen to what Shirley, from across the pond, is saying to us. We were her great hope. Do not let that hope die!

As Daniel Webster said, “God grants liberty only to those who love it and are always ready to guard and defend it.”

We must stand for righteousness, for the God granted freedoms stated in our Constitution. We must repent for our nation, pray with a fervency in our hearts, and plead for mercy for our country.

Will you guard and defend our beloved America? Will you honor Shirley’s encouragement? I pray so.
