What would it mean if you did not inform a person that their property was stolen? If you are standing on the street and you see someone take your neighbors tools or car, would you somehow be responsible?
Many would say no, but would this not be like serving as a lookout for the criminal. Even if you did not gain anything for your silence, there is a complicit element in your choice. Now, what if you were a government agent? Or worse, an entire branch of government?
This is what we have to ask concerning the IRS.
The Washington Times reports:
The IRS has discovered more than 1 million Americans whose Social Security numbers were stolen by illegal immigrants, but officials never bothered to tell the taxpayers themselves, the agency’s inspector general said in a withering new report released Tuesday.
Investigators first alerted the IRS to the problem five years ago, but it’s still not fixed, the inspector general said, and a pilot program meant to test a solution was canceled — and fell woefully short anyway.
Now, in theory, it is not the IRS’s job to catch illegal immigrants. Their job is to collect taxes, and this is exactly how they are catching this theft. The problem is they are failing to inform the taxpayer or the Social Security Administration (SSA).
The reason is that they do not want the illegal immigrants to quit filing and paying their taxes. So, instead of passing this information on to the SSA, they have done nothing – they have not even contacted the victims of these crimes.
So, you never know, you might have several credit cards that you do not know about – or worse, someone else might draw your social security when you retire.
