Home » If You Think You’re Playing It Safe By Only Condemning Lawlessness, You’re Helping to Destroy Society
Sometimes we look out at our culture and wonder what has gone so wrong that we have devolved so quickly. As I’ve said previously, I believe that we have turned from the God of the Bible and His law, and thus, we are succumbing to the very curses He said would come upon those that forget Him (Deut. 30). Part of turning from God is also turning from the gospel of grace that saves sinners. Over the weekend, The Sons of Liberty Radio show host Bradlee Dean spoke about this very issue and gave a warning to those who think they can stand back and simply condemn without reaching out to the culture with the truth.
“When I first started reaching out to the homosexual communities…, I remember seeing a church group in St. Cloud, Minnesota… and I remember… the church people had an outdoor event where they had all the locals in St. Cloud to come to condemn homosexual ‘marriage,'” Dean recalled. “And rightfully so… They had about 2-300 people just in that community. They had a good response.”
However, apart from condemnation, it didn’t seem as though there was any hope held out to those practicing sodomy.
“They were just sitting there condemning the homosexuals and condemning them and condemning them with this argument and that argument,” Dean added. “I remember I went over to the speaker because I’m pretty well-known here in the State of Minnesota… and I said, ‘You know, it’s one thing to condemn what they’re doing, but Jesus came into the world to save sinners (Matt. 1:21). Why is it that you’re just talking about them, but you won’t cross the street to talk to them?”
Understand that sin is nothing more than violating the law of God (1 John 3:4). Also, understand that the man who referred to himself as the “chief of sinners,” the apostle Paul, wrote much of the New Testament. He was one that had persecuted, imprisoned and helped to murder God’s people. Yet, it was Christ who stopped him from his sinful behavior. Paul would later write:
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” -1 Timothy 1:15
It’s also worthy to remind Christians that even those that have practiced sodomy were redeemed in Corinth. Paul mentioned that the “effeminate” and “abusers of themselves with mankind (those that practice sodomy)” were what some of those in the Corinthian Church had once practiced, but they were “washed,” “sanctified,” and “justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (1 Cor. 6:9-11).” In other words, they no longer engaged in the sinful behavior they once did and, therefore, were no longer under condemnation (John 8:11; Rom. 8:1)
In demonstrating the kind of love that we are to have towards our fellow men, Dean recounted that he and his assistant crossed the street and spoke to the supporters of sodomy.
“We said, ‘Hey listen, we understand what’s going on here,'” said Dean. “We’re not going to condone your sinful lifestyle, your abominable lifestyle, but we do want you to know who the Christ is and what He’s for us.”
After all, it’s not about how bad of a sinner each of us might be. It’s about how great a Savior Jesus the Christ is!
In my own experience, I’ve often told people that I don’t look down on them. After all, before God, I’m just as sinful as the next person. However, in proclaiming Christ, what He accomplished and how He changed me, my hope is that He might also do the same thing for those I proclaim Him too, knowing that God’s elect (2 Tim. 2:10) are among “all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues (Rev. 7:9).”
Dean went on to tell how their conversation went and said that those who supported sodomy were angry at the professed Christians who would not cross the street to speak to them.
“They want to play it safe,” said Dean, speaking of those who will not go out and speak to sinners and seek to bring the message of the gospel to them. “Are you one of those that want to play it safe? Because if you think you’re playing it safe, you’re actually, at length, destroying society.”
