I Really Wish I Could Support Trump

I really want to like Donald Trump. I really wish I could support The Donald, but if you’ve read anything I’ve written about him, you’ll understand I just can’t – but I want to.

Right now, he is saying what every conservative is thinking. We on the right have been craving a candidate who will take it to the left – no backing down – no compromise. And Trump is filling the bill – like Newt Gingrich on steroids.

Many would say – yeah well – it’s all an act. He knows his audience and he’s playing right to them – telling them what they want to hear. While I agree that he is a showman and he is playing to the audience, this is no act.

What we see is who he is. He’s rich and he’s powerful and he relishes any opportunity to say so. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s about time we heard from someone who is not ashamed of their wealth, especially because he earned it.

The fact is that I do, on some level, really enjoy Trump. I’ve heard he is a nice guy, but he’s also an arrogant loud mouth. Yet, you can’t help but smile when he’s verbally beating down the left. We can’t help but react with a: “Yeah – go get um!” And really, there’s nothing wrong with that, to a point.

There’s a saying in naval intelligence that you must be able to hear the message through the noise. Trump is a master of noise, and most of what he’s thrown out is just that – red meat for the ravenous right, starved for a candidate who will not only stand up to the left, but who will also smack them down when they try to respond. He is doing to the left what they have done to us for years, and conservatives have noticed.

And honestly, although unartful, what he exclaimed about illegal immigration is true. They are definitely not sending their best and brightest. There are no Carlos Slims strolling across our southern border. But, as he said, there are a whole lot of murderers, rapists, and gang members.

So we’ve heard the noise and evidently like it. That’s apparent from the support he’s getting. But what of the message? Well, there is no real message – at least, not yet. We’ve heard the speeches and seen the left’s apoplectic reaction, but then what?

If you go to Trump’s campaign site, there’s not much there. As I said – a lot of noise, but no message.

He may tell us he’s for the troops, he’s for traditional marriage (I hate that term), and “Mr. Trump has over 7 million followers on social media. He frequently uses this platform to advocate for Conservative causes, Republican candidates and to educate the public on the failures of the Obama administration.”

Terrific, but we need specifics. We need to know his plans for how he will fix things. What will he do about Common Core, the EPA, the IRS, Obamacare, etc.? Just saying you don’t like them isn’t good enough.

So here’s my fear: I think Trump may end up as the right’s Obama. I think he’s so arrogant that he believes he can, like Obama, by force of will, cause others to cooperate. And if they don’t, he would bring the force of his government to bear on them.

Don’t get me wrong. Unlike Obama, I believe Trump loves this country, but the president should not and cannot be a “my way or the highway” guy, and I think that’s who Trump is. And I don’t think he minds big government. Like all progressives, he just wants to be in charge.

We need a president who has reverence for the Constitution and is not afraid to drop to his knees and ask God for guidance. We need someone who is humbled by the office, not someone who will change the name to the Trump White House.

As much as I am enjoying the spectacle and the toughness he is displaying, The Donald is not the guy.
