Historic North Korea-US Summit Ends With Joint Statement In Pursuit of Peaceful Korean Peninsula

While there has been tension between North Korea and its neighbors for decades, the same could be said of the relationship between North Korea and the united States.  Even when President Donald Trump took office, many thought he was merely escalating tensions with his military move and rhetoric, but fast forward a year later and now the two men, Trump and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Kim Jong-Un, have come face-to-face for the first time to discuss a strategy of peace and de-nuclearization of the Communist country.

Here’s video of the historic handshake.

“President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the statement said.

Trump later told reporters that the denuclearization process would start “very, very quickly” and it would be verified.

The president also said that Jong-Un agreed to destroy a ‘major’ missile testing site.

In an interview with ABC, Trump said that North Korea would be getting rid of all their nukes.

Stephanopoulos: They’ve got to get rid of all their nuclear weapons?

Trump: They will. I really believe that he will. I’ve gotten to know him well over a short period of time.

Stephanopoulos: Did he tell you that?

Trump: Yeah, sure. It’s de-nuking, I mean he’s de-nuking the whooole, place, and he’s going to start very quickly, I think he’s going to start now.

That seems to be a little beyond what is written in the statement, but time will tell if North Korea can actually be trusted or not.  I have my doubt, but then again, many people doubted that Trump would have had a meeting with Jong-Un.  That has now been accomplished and we previously, we saw a meeting between the leaders of North and South Korea with a plan to engage in a peace process with one another after decades of hostilities.

When asked whether or not President Trump could trust the North Korea leader, he said that he had learned from a lifetime of deals.

Additionally, Fox News reports that more than denuclearization was discussed.

Trump appeared optimistic at a press conference after Kim had left the island.

Trump told reporters that the remains of U.S. prisoners of war and those missing in action during the Korean War will also be returned.

Trump said he asked Kim to commit to returning the remains “and we got it.”

The president said he has received “countless calls” and letters from family members asking him to help them receive the remains of their loved ones.

Trump also told reporters that Jong-Un had a “great personality” and is “very smart. Good combination.”  He also said he would be willing to invite him to the White House.

The full text of the joint statement is below.

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) held first historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive in-depth and sincere exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Convinced that the establishment of new US-DPRK relations will contribute to the peace and prosperity of the Korean peninsula and of the world, and recognizing that mutual confidence building can promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un state the following:

  1. The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity
  2. The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula
  3. Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
  4. The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

Having acknowledged that the US-DPRK summit — the first in history — was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulation in this joint statement fully and expeditiously. The United States and the DPRK commit to hold follow-on negotiations, led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit.

President Donald J Trump of the United States of America and Chairman Kim Jong Un of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have committed to cooperate for the development of new US-DPRK relations and for the promotion of peace, prosperity, and security of the Korean Peninsula and of the world.

Just like the peace process between North and South Korea, time will ultimately tell whether or not North Korea is trustworthy or not.
