KATV reports

Arkansas State University in Jonesboro tweeted Thursday afternoon an active shooter has been spotted at the student union on its campus.

A-State said in its tweet at 1:35 p.m., “Everyone should evacuate to the west side of the building and clear the area.”

Channel 7 News has learned students are getting Campus Alert text messages that say, “Man with weapon is on east side of student union. Campus lockdown immediately.”

Another tweet sent by Arkansas State at 1:48 p.m. said an individual with a weapon has been surrounded by police. No shots have been fired and there have been no reported injuries, according to the tweet.

RT reports that the incident comes just “”two days after two members of the school’s football team were arrested on drug charges. Chris Stone, a 23-year-old senior defensive end, and Tyler Trosin, 22-year-old senior receiver, were arrested at about 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office.”

Arkansas Online reported, “The gunman’s motive wasn’t immediately known, though a Facebook page for a man with the same name as Bartelt mentioned a 2012 accident another ASU campus. The rambling posting, published on Wednesday, said that said the writer had told ‘multiple professionals and people in State of Arkansas I AM SUICIDAL and now HOMICIDAL.'”

A new conference was scheduled for later in the day on Thursday.

UPDATE: KATV confirms that an active shooter drill had recently been performed on the campus.

Channel 7 News talked to Jeff Hankins, Vice President of Strategic Communications for Arkansas State University, about the situation that unfolded.

“We are incredibly thankful for law enforcement authorities for their success in quickly controlling the situation, for surrounding the vehicle and keeping our faculty, staff, and students out of harm’s way,” Hankins said.

Hankins also told KATV the university had recently conducted an active shooter drill on campus at the student union.
