Groom Saves Life During Wedding Speech

So, what does a groom do on his wedding day when he discovers someone at the wedding reception is choking. He springs into action, of course, even if it’s in the middle of his own wedding speech.

Cody Campbell, a Los Angeles County firefighter, was enjoying the aftermath of his wedding to his bride Kelly in Rancho Santa Margarita and giving a speech when there came a cry for help from one of the tables.

“I heard a couple people yell, ‘My God, she’s choking,'” Campbell’s father Craig Campbell, a retired fire captain, told KABC. “I happened to turn over to the table over here and witnessed a lady that had a complete airway obstruction.”

Before the older Campbell could respond, his son sprang into action and did what he was trained to do, perform the Heimlich maneuver. The woman had apparently got a piece of meat lodged in her throat.

“Just went back on my training and just performed the Heimlich, and about five or six thrusts, a piece of meat became dislodged from her throat,” Cody said.

The woman Cody saved was a relatives of his wife. She is in her 60s.

Apparently many of the guests thought the life saving maneuver was somehow planned since Cody’s family is composed of first responders.

“Some people in the back, who really couldn’t see this far ahead, truly thought that it might have been staged, but I assure you, I am not an actress, that was not faking it,” the newly wedded Mrs. Campbell said.

“Saving someone’s life right in front of me on my wedding day and right in front of his son, that’s something that we’ll have forever,” she added. “It’s so special.”

Indeed it is. Even in a time of celebration instincts born of being well trained saved the day and a life. No doubt, the Campbell’s wedding will be one to remember! Well done Mr. Campbell!
