Want to make the French Angry? Tell them to Take Wine Off the Menu.
That’s the lesson we’ve learned from the latest international hubbub in Paris.
Sure, the Iranians support (both financially and philosophically) terrorism. Sure, the Iranians are raging anti-Semites who kill the Jews as soon as let them live in a tiny strip of desert a thousand miles away. Sure, the Iranians are working towards building a nuclear armament capable of instigating WW III and wreaking havoc around the world. Sure, the Iranians have already broken their latest agreement with the USA and Europe by building ICBM missiles capable of attacking their enemies. Sure, the Iranians have proven to be evil bloodthirsty villains who are willing to use as much violence, force and chaos as necessary to accomplish their nefarious ends.
But when they demand that no wine appear on the menu for a lunch meeting… that’s where France draws the line.
A lunch between the French and Iranian presidents in Paris was scrapped today because France refused to remove wine from the menu.
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has been on a tour of Europe, signing billions of pounds worth of business deals with different nations, after economic sanctions against the country were lifted.
He was due to dine with President Francois Hollande at an upmarket restaurant in the French capital.
The French insisted on serving local food and wine but the Iranians demanded a halal menu in keeping with their Muslim faith.
Hollande's officials said preparing the meal to be 'Iran friendly' went against France's republican values.
The Elysee Palace suggested a breakfast with Rouhani instead, but this was said to be snubbed by the Iranian leader for being 'too cheap'.
It seems to me that there is a middle ground between covering up your artwork and not serving alcohol, isn’t there? I mean, couldn’t the French have served a meal that offered halal dishes alongside their traditional French fare? And the Italians probably shouldn’t have gone so far as hiding their artwork to please Muslim sensibilities.
However, if I’m going to land on one side or the other… I’m with the French. I’d rather have a good glass of wine with lunch than break bread with the leaders of the vicious, terror supporting Iranian regime.
