Former Border Patrol Chief: Illegal Crossings of Border cut 67% under Trump

A former Border Patrol chief testified before a Senate hearing and revealed that since the inauguration of President Donald Trump, illegal aliens crossing the border have decreased 67 percent since last year.

David Aguilar, a former Border Patrol chief revealed the new numbers during the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, updating them from the previous March 8 release.

Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) referenced a recent Border Patrol press release that mentioned there was a drop of 40 percent in illegal crossings.

“Let me just update that March 8” release, he said.  “As of the 31st of March, five days ago, whatever it is, it’s actually up to a 67 percent drop compared to last year.”

According to Aguilar, Trump’s tough talk about illegal immigration is having an impact and that impact occurs, “when the U.S. stands strong and takes certain action, substantive action.”

The committee also spoke about oversight of the construction of the wall on our southern border, which has a tentative cost of $5-8 billion, which was put forward by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI).

The Washington Examiner reports:

Sen. Ron Johnson said the estimate is based on current costs and the price Israel recently paid for its southern fence, revealed to him during a trip to the Jewish State late last year.

In his first of two hearings this week on the wall, Johnson used Israel’s average price of $2.9 million a mile for his estimate. He added in about $1 million per mile for land purchases highlighted by committee Democrats.

“So tack on $1 million to $2.9 million and the total cost to 2,000 mile wall, and I don’t anybody here in this hearing room … is suggesting 2,000 miles. We’re looking at the right kind of fencing, the right place, but even that would be less than $8 billion, somewhere between $5 billion and $8 billion,” said Johnson.

I’m guessing that wall will be at least twice that, if not three times more!

While President Trump has promised that Mexico will pay for the wall, the fact of the matter is that US citizens will be funding this with a promised IOU from Trump on behalf of Mexico.

In mid-March, the Trump administration put forward the requirement of the border wall.  Nearly 700 companies have registered as potential vendors for the wall project.  Contractors have been given until March 29 to submit proposals for the first phase of the build.

Now, if tough talk is enough to start causing illegal aliens to stop crossing the border, the wall will certainly have some impact, as well.  However, an even greater solution exists to the issue of illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

Former Congressman Ron Paul put forward workable solutions to save taxpayers money, not spend it.

“The solution to really addressing the problem of illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and the threat of cross-border terrorism is clear: remove the welfare magnet that attracts so many to cross the border illegally, stop the 25 year US war in the Middle East, and end the drug war that incentivizes smugglers to cross the border,” he wrote in February.

“I believe it is important for the United States to have secure borders, but unfortunately, President Trump’s plan to build a wall will end up costing a fortune while ignoring the real problem of why people cross the borders illegally,” Paul concluded.  “They will keep coming as long as those incentives remain.”

I tend to agree with him.  While the wall will make it more difficult, there will be those who find a way under or around it get here for the goodies given out by criminal politicians acting in violation of the Constitution.  Why is it that the solutions Paul has put forward are never addressed?  His solution actually saves money and increases liberty instead of spending money we simply do not have.
