FACT CHECK: Biden Lied When He Said He Never Oppose Fracking

During Thursday’s final presidential debate, Democrat nominee Joe Biden tried to rewrite history and claimed he never said he wants to ban fracking. The truth is, he simply lied.

At one point during the October 22 debate, President Trump hammered Joe Biden over his conflicting statements about fracking. The president first brought fracking up during his discussion about healthcare.

“You’re going to have socialized medicine,” Trump said before segueing to fracking. “Just like you went on with fracking — ‘We’re not going to have fracking, we’re going to stop fracking, we’re going to stop fracking.’ Then he goes to Pennsylvania after he gets the nomination — well he got very lucky to get it. And he goes to Pennsylvania, and he says, ‘Oh, we’re gonna have fracking.’ And you never asked a question. And by the way, so far, I respect very much the way you’re handling this, I have to say. But by the way, somebody should ask the question. He goes for a year…”

Joe ignored the comment. But Trump was not done. Close to the end of the debate, Trump asked Joe’s position of fracking one more time, saying, “We’re gonna have the greatest economy in the world. But if you want to kill the economy, get rid of your oil industry. You want– And what about fracking?”

To that Biden said directly. “I have never said I oppose fracking.” Then he said that Trump was “flat out lying” about Joe’s past proclamations about fracking.

But Trump pressed again: “Would you rule out banning fracking?”

That resulted in this exchange:

BIDEN: I do rule out banning fracking because the answer we need– We need other industries to transition to get to, ultimately, a complete zero emissions by 2025. What I will do with fracking over time is make sure that we can capture the emissions from the fracking. Capture the emissions from gas. We can do that and we can do that by investing money into– It’s a transition to that.

TRUMP: Excuse me. He was against fracking. He said it. I will show that to you tomorrow. ‘I am against fracking’, until he got the nomination, went to Pennsylvania than he said– You know what, Pennsylvania? He’ll be against it very soon because his party is totally against it.

BIDEN: Fracking on federal Land, I said. No fracking or oil on federal land.

Biden lied, and even CNN had to note that “It’s false that Biden never said he opposed fracking.”

“In 2019, Biden said ‘we would make sure it’s eliminated’ when asked about the future of coal and fracking; in 2020 he said he opposed ‘new fracking,'” CNN added.

Biden absolutely said that he would end fracking before he said he now supports it. It is a “flat out lie” to say he never opposed it.

But there is another point to this. A U.S. president has absolutely no authority to ban fracking. It would take an act of congress to do that, and it is one that would probably lose in a court challenge. However, a president can impose punishing EPA regulations to make fracking untenable. Those may also face an unsure outcome in court.
