“In the world nothing can be said to be certain except death and taxes.”
Your property is immorally taxes. Your income is unlawfully taxed and so are your investments, but how about your email? Well just as government is looking to tax the rest of your internet, an email tax is on the minds of those in government. This comes as the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been in default for billions of dollars since last year.
One Berkley City California Councilman Gordon Wozniak have seen dollar signs by looking at taxing emails and has said so at a recent council meeting. Specifically he said the taxation could be used to reduce the spread of “spam” and other unwanted emails. “There should be something like a bit tax … [it] could be a cent per gigabit and they would make, probably, billions of dollars a year,” he said. There should also be a “very tiny tax on email,” he added.
Fox News reports,
Wozniak told FoxNews.com the response to the idea has been varied.
“Most people don’t like the idea of taxing the Internet,” he acknowledged. “There are a number of people who say it’s a good idea, but some are saying it’s impractical and there’s no way to do it.”
Chris Edwards, an economist with the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute, is one of those people.
“It’s a terrible idea,” Edwards told FoxNews.com.
“The government doesn’t need any more tax money. That’s not the problem. The American government is spending more than ever.”
Plus, he said, a tax like this would hit “different types of industry in different ways.”
The councilman has heard opposition to his proposal too. “I got a lot of nasty emails nationally,” he says. “You are making Berkeley look really silly,” one person wrote. Another called him “the epitome of a communist — you and all your commy liberal idiots.”
LA Times writer George Skelton adds that not only would it cut down on “spammers and scanners,” but he suggested certain emails cost as much as it costs to mail a letter at 46 cents. Anyone want to guess what will happen to business in America if such a tax would take hold at a city level and grow to a national level? That’s right, the economy would absolutely tank.
This is a stupid idea. It’s not a way to govern properly. It’s merely a way for government to extort the citizens for more money and gaining power over them by doing so.Don't forget to Like Freedom Outpost on Facebook and Twitter, and follow our friends at RepublicanLegion.com on Instagram.
