Egypt Bans Muslim Brotherhood and Confiscates Their Assets

While Egypt still has a long way to go to straighten some mess out in their country, a Cairo Court ruled on Monday that the Muslim Brotherhood has been banned from political activity in the Middle East country and their assets have been seized.

The Islamic movement has been around for decades and were formerly permitted to form their own political party following the ousting of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

“The court bans the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood organization and its non-governmental organization and all the activities that it participates in and any organization derived from it,” said the presiding judge Mohammed al-Sayed.

The court ordered the government to seize the Brotherhood’s funds and administer its frozen assets.

The army-backed government is waging the toughest crackdown in decades on the Islamist group, which says it has a million members. Security forces killed hundreds of its supporters and rounded up thousands more since Mursi was deposed by the army on July 3 after mass protests against his rule.

While the Brotherhood has possibly already set an appeal in motion, this decision will severely cripple their appeal and influence.

The Associated Press reports:

The Brotherhood was outlawed for most of its 85 years in existence. But after the 2011 ouster of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, it was allowed to work openly and form a political party. In a string of post-Mubarak elections, the Brotherhood rose to power. In March, it registered as a recognized non-governmental organization.

Morsi, a member of the Freedom and Justice Party who had public support from the Muslim Brotherhood, was forced from office July 3.

The ruling, which can be appealed, opens the door for authorities to undermine the group’s elaborate network of social services, dealing a deadly blow to its pillars of grass-root support.

You’ll recall the revolution that took place to oust Mohamed Morsi recently. Reuters indicates that such a ban on the Muslim Brotherhood will drive them underground and may actually cause young jihadists to take up arms against the state.

On that note, let the chips fall where they will. If only America would deal with the Muslim Brotherhood members that have infiltrated the United States federal government in the same way! I continue to call upon those of the American military who swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic to deal with the domestic enemies in the federal government who are arming our enemies and destroying the nation from within.
