I admit that I like the sentiment, but not at taxpayer expense, nor at the behest of the federal government.  However, President Donald Trump did say that teachers who carry their weapons to school in order to be able to defend themselves and their students should be given a bonus.

The comments came during a February meeting in response to the Florida school shooting and the ideology behind it is one that is more constitutional than adding a police officer at every school, and far less expensive.

Trump called for "highly adept" teachers to carry guns, saying "you won't have these shootings" if teaching staff are armed.

Trump argued that teachers with concealed weapons will turn schools into "hardened targets."

I couldn't agree more.  Furthermore, he should be calling on Congress to pass Representative Thomas Massie's bill to eliminate "gun free zones," where more than 90% of mass shootings take place.

All of this came in the aftermath of the Parkland, Florida shooting in February 2018.

Trump said that he could find funds to train and arm 1 million teachers.

At the time, Trump tweeted that armed teachers could "....immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions. Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this. Far more assets at much less cost than guards. A “gun free” school is a magnet for bad people. ATTACKS WOULD END!"

The Guardian reported:

At the White House press briefing on Thursday afternoon, Raj Shah, deputy press secretary, was asked if it was practical to expect teachers to carry concealed handguns to protect their students from shooters.

“When you have a horrific situation, what you think and do not think is practical can change,” Shah said.

Teachers’ unions have expressed shock and skepticism that any such plan could be feasible or effective.

But at a meeting at the White House with state and local officials early Thursday afternoon, Trump talked of paying bonuses to some teachers, providing “highly adept people, people who understand weaponry, guns ... [with] a concealed permit”.

He suggested paying bonuses to armed, trained teachers, suggesting that “10, 20, 40%” of teachers could be qualified to do so, especially retired military personnel.

“I want my schools protected just like I want my banks protected,” he said.

Again, the sentiment is nice, but he's referring to federal money.  Since the federal government has been given no authority when it comes to education, they should have no say so when it comes to the schools and school safety.

We should be working to end their carrots and ties to the education system, period.

Yet, at its very basic level, I agree with Trump in that arming teachers would actually provide better security and eliminate an infringement on their rights that are supposed to be protected under the Second Amendment, and for promoting that, he should be patted on the back because he is right.

Of course, his bonus scheme was challenged, and I realize he was speaking off the top of his head, but some pointed out that such bonuses would amount to over $1 billion, to which Shah replied, “Do you really think that’s too much to pay for school safety?”  It is if you're not supposed to be involved in the education system in the first place Mr. Shah.

However, if schools were completely locally controlled, not even by the state, as at least Southern schools were prior to the War of Northern Aggression, then we wouldn't be worrying about a lot of this nonsense because teachers could go to school armed without anyone's permission and without requiring a single dime of taxpayers' money.

Now, that, would be a revolutionary idea.  Trump is close on this one, but continuing to let the federal government wield control over local schools, in any way, including security and education, is a really bad idea... and an unconstitutional one.
