Dem Senator: Obama Is ‘Extreme’ On Gun Control

Democrat Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) appeared on ABC’s This Week With George Stephanopoulos and said that while she believes everything should be on the table in talks about gun control, what she hears coming from the Obama White House is nothing less than “extreme.”

The North Dakota Senator doubts that the Obama administration is going to get real support on Capitol Hill for it’s proposals. “I think you need to put everything on the table, but what I hear from the administration — and if The Washington Post is to be believed — that’s way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it’s not going to pass,” said Heitkamp.

The Post piece she referenced was authored by Philip Rucker. In it, he wrote that the Obama White House task force on gun violence headed by Vice President Joe Biden was considering measures, including universal background checks for all gun buyers, strengthened mental health examinations and tougher penalties for those caught carrying firearms near schools.

The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.

A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda.

In addition to potential legislative proposals, Biden’s group has expanded its focus to include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action, according to interest-group leaders who have discussed options with Biden and key Cabinet secretaries. Possibilities include changes to federal mental-health programs and modernization of gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

That is way beyond an “assault” weapons and high-capacity magazine ban. On top of that, does anyone else remember how well this administration’s ATF tracked weapons into the hands of Mexican drug cartels during Operation Fast and Furious? Oh that’s right, they put trackers on a total of 2 weapons out of 2,500 and one of those was homemade by an ATF agent. Both had 40 hour battery lives, so they were never intent on actually tracking them at all.

Sen. Heitkamp holds an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association and says the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut calls for a greater look at mental health than for guns. “One of the issues that I think comes — screams out of this is the issue of mental health and the care for the mentally ill in our country, especially the dangerously mentally ill,” said Heitkamp. “And so we need to have a broad discussion before we start talking about gun control.”

It’s good to see a Democrat call the Obama agenda “extreme,” because it is the truth. Anyone can look at the data and see there is not a gun problem, especially when it comes to semi-automatic rifles in our society. It is not only asinine to say so, but it is dishonest and it is an outright lie. The problem could better be directed at idiot politicians who seem to have nothing better to do than create ways to tax Americans and trample on the Constitution and the rights of the citizens that Constitution is supposed to protect.

While Senator Heitkamp may not agree with the Obama administration over their extreme position, there is no doubt that what we are witnessing now is a push for their real agenda and it comes from their own mouths. Attorney General Eric Holder was one that said that people needed to be “brainwashed” in order to deal a blow to the Second Amendment. Barack Obama has vowed to “use whatever power this office holds” to prevent mass shootings from occurring in the future and it seems that Congress has been all too willing to go along with him in the past. He has demanded that legislation be forthcoming and Senator Feinstein has obliged to push a weapons ban.

Things are happening in a flurry. Eight gun control bills were presented on the first day of the new Congress. Immediately following the election in November Barack Obama reopened the United Nations Small Arms Treaty talks, and on January 22 of this year, Sen. Dianne Feinstein will present her “assault” weapons ban bill.

We must hold our representatives feet to the fire on this one Constitutionalists and Patriots. Make your voice heard in Washington and flood your representatives’ emails, faxes and phones over all this unnecessary legislation.
