Conservatives Campaign To “Fire Boehner”

Yesterday Freedom Outpost’s Kevin Fobbs asked “Will Speaker Boehner’s Purge Of Tea Party Membership On Key House Committees Backfire? That question came in response to Boehner and the GOP leadership removing at least four fiscally conservative Tea Party members from both the Financial Services Committee and the Budget Committee, including Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ), Walter Jones (R-NC), Justin Amash (R-MI), and Tim Huelskamp (R-KS). Well Kevin’s question has been answered and quickly I might add. The American Majority Action has launched a campaign to “depose” the Speaker from his position.

The AMA’s campaign is #FireBoehner. According to the press release:

American Majority Action (AMA) has joined numerous other conservative groups in denouncing House Speaker John Boehner for purging four conservative House members from their committees.

However, AMA has taken it a step further. Beyond denouncing the Speaker, AMA’s President and CEO, Ned Ryun, has called for GOP members to fire John Boehner as speaker.

“Speaker Boehner has been an abysmal failure as speaker, and his latest purge is the nail in the coffin for conservatives.” Ryun added, “Boehner has never won a negation battle with the White House or Senate—and he’s been nothing short of an embarrassing spokesman for the Conservative Movement. It’s time for him to go.”

While Ryun writes that this sentiment has been expressed since the purge of conservatives from committees on Monday, yours truly has had that sentiment for a couple of years now.

“The Conservative Movement doesn’t realize we only need 16 House votes to block Boehner from becoming Speaker,” Ryun said. “House rules demand nominees for speaker to receive a majority—at least 218 votes—to win election. If 16 members abstain, Boehner only has 217 votes.

“We only need 16 votes to get conservatives on the path to actually reducing our $16 trillion debt,” AMA Virginia Director Matt Robbins added. “If conservatives want to tackle our biggest challenges, we need competent leaders—and frankly—new leaders.”

In speaking the Ron Meyer, Press Secretary and Spokesman for AMA, he told Freedom Outpost that the Twitter hashtag movement began yesterday with the publication of Ned Ryun’s article at RedState around 3pm.

The problem is finding someone that is not a part of the current GOP establishment leadership because they have simply gone along with the status quo. Meyer has said that his group likes Ohio Representative Jim Jordan, the outgoing chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, as a replacement for Boehner, but ““there aren’t enough votes to elect someone new — yet.” However, he did agree with me that obtaining the necessary 16 abstentions was “doable for sure.”

At the time of the press release, #FireBoehner had received over 1,600 tweets. Meyer said that they would look this evening to see where those numbers are, which he expected to grow considerably.
