California: Next State to Push Assisted Suicide

Having escaped the horrors of World War II, many Americans have little understanding of how things worked under the Nazi reign.  The average American has this fantasy that it all happened at once:  The Nazis came to power and overnight began their campaign of extermination.  However, the reality is that it was a gradual change.  There were laws passed incrementally, and these was propagated an understanding of mercy and relief.  Emotions were played upon, and the wallet strings were plucked.  Now, it is happening at a much slower pace, but happening nonetheless in states across America.

Christian News reports:

SB 128, also known as the “End of Life Option Act,” was passed by the Democrat-controlled state Senate in a 23-13 vote. If made law, it would allow adults suffering from illnesses that doctors say will lead to death within six months to obtain drugs to kill themselves immediately.

What this does is allows a doctor to claim that a person should be allowed to take their own life because their sickness will kill them within six months.  The patient and the Doctor agree that the quality of life will be such that to live or be made to live would be crueler than death.  And California is not the first.

Christian News adds:

Should the proposed bill become law in California, the most populous state would join Oregon, Washington state, Montana and Vermont in permitting some form of what is often referred to as “physician-assisted suicide.”

And this is not the first time we have seen this in history either.  We know what happened in Germany, but few of us realize how it began.  It began with a call for mercy for those who suffered or would suffer.

Code named “Aktion T 4,” the Nazi euthanasia program to eliminate “life unworthy of life” at first focused on newborns and very young children. Midwives and doctors were required to register children up to age three who showed symptoms of mental retardation, physical deformity, or other symptoms included on a questionnaire from the Reich Health Ministry.

The Nazi euthanasia program quickly expanded to include older disabled children and adults. Hitler’s decree of October, 1939, typed on his personal stationary, enlarged “the authority of certain physicians to be designated by name in such manner that persons who, according to human judgment, are incurable can, upon a most careful diagnosis of their condition of sickness, be accorded a mercy death.”

Though this was not a system that left these decisions up to the patient, it was one that is very similar.  It is similar because it justifies murder.  As I fear we will learn all too well, murder’s appetite is never quenched.

The use of gas chambers at the euthanasia killing centers ultimately served as training centers for the SS. They used the technical knowledge and experience gained during the euthanasia program to construct huge killing centers at Auschwitz, Treblinka and other concentration camps in an attempt to exterminate the entire Jewish population of Europe. SS personnel from the euthanasia killing centers, notably Wirth, Franz Reichleitner and Franz Stangl later commanded extermination camps.

When we become accustomed to death and state-sanctioned killing, we will think less when they come for our neighbors.  Death’s gates are opening, and they will get wider if we allow this to continue.
