Baltimore’s Inconvenient Truth

A professor of political science at Duke University is in hot water over comments he made recently. Professor Jerry Hough commented on a May 9 New York Times article entitled “How Racism Doomed Baltimore.”

The Times article attempted to portray Baltimore as a historically racist city, citing cases of racial segregation and racism back to the early 20th century. The article, penned by the New York Times Editorial Board states that “Other cities are plagued by the same difficulties, but they have proved especially intractable in Baltimore. A new study from Harvard offers evidence that Baltimore is perhaps the worst large city in the country when measured by a child’s chances of escaping poverty. For example, those who grew up in recent decades in Baltimore earned 28% less at age 26 than otherwise similar kids who grew up in an average County in the United States. As shocking as they are, these facts make perfect sense in the context of the century long assault that Baltimore’s blacks have endured at the hands of local, state and federal policymakers.”

So according to the Times Editorial Board, Baltimore’s problems are indeed rooted in racism. The problem is that professor Hough isn’t buying the New York Times narrative. Instead, he had the nerve to compare blacks with Asians – another historically oppressed race in America.

Hough wrote: “The blacks get awful editorials like this that tell them to feel sorry for themselves.” And he’s right. The left loves to promote the narrative that blacks can do nothing about their supposed oppression but blame others and feel sorry for themselves. He added that Asians don’t succumb to this narrative. He wrote that “Asians didn’t feel sorry for themselves, but worked doubly hard.”

In other words, the “Asians” didn’t use the oppression excuse as did blacks. They did what needed to be done to break through the race barrier.

Hough said for these comments he was called ignorant and a racist by one of his colleagues. To that he said: “The question is whether you want to get involved in the harassment and few do. I am 80 and figure I can speak the truth as I see it. Ignorant I am not.”

Another of Professor Hough’s comments drew the ire (that’s putting it mildly) of many in his further praising of Asians. He wrote: “Every Asian student has a very simple old American first name that symbolizes their desire for integration. Virtually every black has a strange new name that symbolizes their lack of desire for integration. The amount of Asian-white dating is enormous and so, surely, will be the intermarriage. Black-white dating is almost nonexistent because of the ostracism by blacks of anyone who dates a white.”

You could just imagine the comments he received from that.

So, does Professor Hough have a point? Is he right, or, as the left decries, is Baltimore just a city run by evil racists, whose sole purpose appears to keep the black man down and segregated in the worst areas of the city?

Well, let me illuminate the situation in Baltimore. (Hat Tip Newt Gingrich for the following fun facts)

Fact: The last time Republicans held both the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of delegates was 1897.

Fact: The last time Republicans held even one chamber of the Maryland General Assembly – the House – was 1917. That is unbroken Democratic control of the Maryland Legislature since 1918, or nearly a century of Democrat control.

Fact: The last Republican city Council member in Baltimore city left office in 1942. That is 73 years of solid Democrat city councils.

Fact: The last Republican mayor of Baltimore city left office in 1967. That is 48 years of unbroken Democratic control of the Mayor’s office.

Facts are funny things. You can run away from them, you can attempt to hide them, but you cannot change them. I wonder how many blacks know these inconvenient facts or how many more decades the Democrats figure they will need to “fix” Baltimore. Has anyone asked them?

The “fact” is, Professor Hough was right. Until blacks figure out what the “Asians” already have – work hard and integrate yourselves – their problems will never be solved.

That and throw off the yoke of their Democrat taskmasters.
