It is not something many of us think about today. If we think about Judgment at all, it is in the context of eternal damnation. Rarely do we consider that God still brings judgment or wrath on a people or nation. The reason for this is manifold: Doctrinal teaching, which splits the Old and New Testaments into unconnected parts, an over emphasizing of God’s love for mankind, and a neglect of the justice of God all contribute. But, like with the Old Testament Church, God has raised men up to call His people back to a right understanding and to give warning.
Christian News reports:
A legal brief recently submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court warns that forcing states to recognize same-sex “marriage” could bring God’s judgment upon the nation.
To some, this might seem like a repugnant idea. God bringing judgment on everyone because of the sins of a few, makes God seem to be unfair. Why would our loving Lord do such a thing? Well, we have to remember that the God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament as well. If He punished unchecked wickedness then, He punishes unchecked wickedness now. This brief places the Supreme Court’s decision as a tipping point.
“This case before this Court is this nation’s tower of Babel. At issue is whether we as a people are going to continue to conform the institution of marriage to the one created and established by God, or instead will reform the most sacred of human institutions into something else chosen by an elite set of jurists,” reads the amicus brief, filed by the U.S. Justice Foundation of Ramona, Calif. and the law offices of William Olsen of Vienna, Va.
The brief also cites Scripture as the basis for their conclusion. They write:
“The Holy Scriptures reveal that God created mankind, male and female, in the image of God,” the attorneys declare, pointing to Genesis 1:27 and Matthew 19:4-6. “Homosexual sex and homosexual marriage are a repudiation of God’s created order.”
“Should the court require the states and the people to ‘ritualize’ sodomite behavior by government issuance of a state marriage license, it could bring God’s judgment on the nation,” they warn, pointing to Leviticus 18:22 and 24-30. “Holy Scripture attests that homosexual behavior and other sexual perversions violate the law of the land, and when the land is ‘defiled,’ the people have been cast out of their homes.”
This means that they take the punishment brought on the nations of Canaan as an example of God’s dealing with sinful nations. We see this as well in what God told Abraham in Genesis 15:16.
“Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”
The reason God gives for the delay in the descendants of Abraham receiving the land of Promise was that the current inhabitance had not yet completed their iniquity. Now, we have to ask the question. What does God mean? Well, it seems obvious if we take this verse and compare it to what we are told in the verse sighted in the brief: Lev. 18:22, 24-30.
22 You shall not lie with a male as [a]one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
24 ‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled. 25 For the land has become defiled, therefore I have brought its punishment upon it, so the land has spewed out its inhabitants. 26 But as for you, you are to keep My statutes and My judgments and shall not do any of these abominations, neither the native, nor the alien who sojourns among you 27 (for the men of the land who have been before you have done all these abominations, and the land has become defiled); 28 so that the land will not spew you out, should you defile it, as it has spewed out the nation which has been before you. 29 For whoever does any of these abominations, those persons who do so shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Thus you are to keep My charge, that you do not practice any of the abominable customs which have been practiced before you, so as not to defile yourselves with them; I am the Lord your God.'”
From this, we can point to God bringing judgment on these nations for disobedience to His Word, nations who were under no covenant and had received no special revelation. This tells us that nations are judged and punished by God for breaking His Law. America is not exempt from this judgment. If we have not gone too far in our shunning of God’s holy requirements, then we surely will if the Supreme Court breaks God’s command and the constitution’s by allowing sodomite unions.
