An Amtrak train derails, killing seven so far and injuring hundreds more. Frankly, it's a miracle more weren't killed. Some are in critical condition and may still die from their injuries, but still, it's a minor miracle.
Evidently, the train was traveling in excess of 100 mph. "The speed limit is 70 mph just before the curve and 50 mph along the curve itself," the Federal Railroad Administration said. Amtrak inspected the stretch of track on Tuesday, just hours before the accident, and found no defects.
Although there have been track and equipment failures in the past - some might call these things "infrastructure" - it's pretty rare. Actually, train accidents are pretty rare, regardless of the cause. Including this one, there have been six train accidents thus far in 2015, and exactly none had anything to do with equipment or "infrastructure."
In January, a prison bus was struck by a train in Texas. There were two in February: a Metro North train hit a car, and then there was a derailment in California caused by a train hitting a vehicle on the tracks. There were two in March: an Amtrak train hit a tractor-trailer in North Carolina, and a Los Angeles Expo-line train collided with two cars. Then, of course, there is this latest horrific derailment that appears, so far, to be driver error.
Five out of the six train accidents this year were caused by idiots in vehicles parked across the tracks and the other, at least so far, appears to be the fault of the driver.
Still, this latest is truly tragic - and what do we know about tragedy? For some it will become an instant crisis. And, of course, we know what the Democrat mantra is. Never let a good crisis go to waste. Politicize everything and financially benefit from it.
As despicable as that sounds in the face of all the death, injury, and destruction, that is exactly what the Dems are attempting.
The Washington Examiner reported: "House Democrats are using Tuesday's deadly train derailment to pressure the GOP to double Amtrak's 2016 funding. Democratic appropriators Wednesday tried to amend the fiscal 2016 transportation funding bill with a provision that would fund Amtrak at $2.45 billion, which is the level requested by Pres. Obama in his 2016 spending plan."
"It is deeply troubling that my Republican colleagues defeated an amendment to fully fund Amtrak just hours after this tragic rail crash," said Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, who is the top Democrat on the Appropriations panel. Rep. Lowey added that the Republican bill "drastically short-changes job creating investments critical to hard-working American families, like roads, bridges, and rail systems and access to safe and affordable housing."
Now how on earth would any of the Democrat "proposals" have helped or prevented the derailment. Of course they wouldn't have, but Democrats know only two ways to solve any problem - throw money at it and regulate it to death. Neither would have prevented this derailment or prevented morons from stopping on railroad tracks.
Still, the facts be darned when you're a Democrat. Pennsylvania congressman Chaka Fattah, who represents Philadelphia, exclaimed, "While it's too early to speculate on the cause of last night's derailment, ensuring safety and reliability of our railways require substantial investment in Amtrak, and it is imperative we continue to prioritize our country's investment in transportation infrastructure. Every day, tens of thousands of passengers travel our nation's railways on Amtrak - a majority of those along the Northeast corridor where yesterday's tragic accident occurred. These riders deserve safe, secure, and modern infrastructure."
Mr. Fattah, you may wish to cover yourself—your idiocy is showing.
These Democrats are, indeed, lower than low, but they just can't help themselves. Rather than just waiting for an investigation - maybe reaching out to support the families who lost loved ones - they must revert back to the despicable bottom feeders they are.
