A security official told the AP the American taught chemistry at the city's International School, a Libyan-owned institute that follows an American curriculum.

anr_libya_120513According to Reuters, Adel Mansouri, the director at the school in Benghazi, said that the teacher was shot around lunchtime.

"He was doing his morning exercise when gunmen just shot him. I don't know why. He was so sweet with everyone," Mansouri told Reuters.

The Associated Press adds that security official Ibrahim al-Sharaa said the American was jogging near the consulate when he was shot.

So far no one has claimed responsibility for the murder and the victim's name has not been released until next of kin have been notified.

Several Libyan militia groups have grown in power since the 2011 war which overthrew Moammar Gadhafi and have been instrumental in undermining transitional governments since that time.

Ansar al-Shariah, the Islamic jihadist group that is believed to have been behind the attacks on September 11, 2012 have been fighting against Libyan security forces. Many in Benghazi and the surrounding areas have begun to protest the group.

The question that remains is, was this a hit by Ansar al-Shariah? Furthermore, will anyone actually be brought to justice over the September 11, 2012 attacks or this latest murder of an American in Benghazi?
