American ‘Model Soldier’ Found Dead In ‘Seedy, Industrial’ Italian Neighborhood

A model U.S. soldier was found dead Friday in a “seedy, industrial” Italian neighborhood four days after he was reported missing.

The soldier belonged to the National Guard and was on a six-month assignment with U.S. Army Africa, but on Tuesday, the 32-year-old soldier simply did not show up for work, Stars and Stripes reports.

Jeff Alderson, a spokesman for U.S. Army Africa, told Stars and Stripes that the soldier was “as far as we know, pretty much a model soldier. It was definitely considered out of character when he didn’t show up for work on Tuesday morning.”

Officials would not say where the soldier’s body was discovered or who discovered the body in west Vicenza, the Italian neighborhood. The soldier was last seen leaving the base and heading into a taxi at 9:30 p.m. He spent last Monday night at a disco, and his body was discovered just a couple of miles away.

The U.S. military and Italian authorities are currently investigating the reason behind Doyle’s death.
