After the Supreme Court's ruling that Obamacare is actually ObamaTax, many have made the point that if the federal government can tax you, which liberals want to call a penalty, for not purchasing health insurance, then they can pretty much determine whatever they want you to buy and if you don't buy it, then they can tax you. Rep. Allen West took a shot at the Left in a speech during an event in Florida. He said the tax code was a weapon that was being used against the American people. To thunderous applause, even a standing ovation, West stated that he would like to suggest that every American, for personal security, should have to buy a gun. His weapon of choice? A Glock 9mm.
“What will be next? If you don’t buy a certain kind of green car, they will tax you. If you don’t buy a certain kind of food, they will tax you. Well I got a great idea. I believe that for personal security every American should have to go out and buy a Glock 9 mm, and if you don’t do it, we’ll tax you. Now I wonder how the liberals will feel about that.”
While I do like the sentiment of every American owning a weapon, though I would bump it up a notch, say a Glock .40 or .45, I understand that West was simply making a point and a good one at that. Though government should not be allowed to force people to purchase things they don't want. If they don't want something, including a gun, then leave them alone.
I applaud the point made by West. However, I believe he was a couple hundred years too late as George Washington signed the Militia Act of 1792 which required such a purchase (though Glock was not around and there were only muskets at the time).
