AG Bill Barr Excoriates Impeachment Inquiry During Political Speech

With the “formal impeachment inquiry” slipping into high gear this week with public hearings, a great many of President Trump’s supporters are on the offensive, defending the Commander in Chief from the slings and arrows of the “resistance”.

Of the President’s men, one notable name had been largely absent from the public sphere as of late:  Attorney General Bill Barr.

Barr’s reticence to comment on the impeachment proceedings in any official capacity is likely a wise move, lest he wish to find himself fending off accusations of partisanship within the Department of Justice.

But, privately, Barr had some fairly damning words for the divisive undertaking.

During a speech at the Federalist Society’s dinner in Washington, Barr took aim at the “resistance,” accusing liberal lawmakers of attacking the very foundations of the Constitution.

“I deeply admire the American presidency as a political and constitutional institution,” he began. “Unfortunately over the past several decades, we have seen a steady encroachment on executive authority by the other branches of the government.”

Barr said the “avalanche of subpoenas” and constant attempt to derail appointments by the Trump administration have only served to “incapacitate” the executive branch.

The Attorney General continued…

“Immediately after President Trump won the election, opponents inaugurated what they called the ‘resistance’ and they rallied around an explicit strategy of using every tool and maneuver to sabotage the functioning of the executive branch and his administration.”

“The cost of this constant harassment is real,” he continued.

The use of the word sabotage pairs nicely with Barr’s previous willingness to use the term “spying” to describe what likely occurred during a FISA warrant scandal currently under investigation within the DOJ – an occurrence that was aimed directly at the 2016 Donald Trump campaign.
