After Mixed-Bag FISA Report, White House Scorches FBI Director Christopher Wray

Yesterday was a day that will long live in the national psyche, with what appears to be the final House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Donald Trump’s impeachment coinciding with the release of a long-anticipated report on possible abuses at the FBI.

Of the two concurrent stories, impeachment has obviously been the larger and more substantial piece, especially given just how testy yesterday’s final hearing was.  House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler appeared poised to pound his gavel into sawdust on several occasions, as House Republicans consistently excoriated him on the subject of the hearing’s obviously lopsided rules.

But the FBI-centric report, stemming from a probe conducted by the DOJ’s Investigator General into the 2016 election, was no dud.  It demonstrated an incredible lack of professionalism at The Bureau, and caused current FBI Director Christopher Wray to lash out.

In an ABC interview, Wray highlighted the IG report’s conclusion that there was no political bias or improper motive behind the FBI’s launching of the Russia probe, stating, “I think it’s important that the inspector general found that in this particular instance the investigation was opened with appropriate predication and authorization.”

When asked if he had any evidence that the FBI unfairly targeted Trump’s campaign, Wray said, “I don’t,” and appeared to take offense to the notion that the FBI is part of a “deep state.”

“I think that’s the kind of label that is a disservice to the 37,000 men and women who work at the FBI who I think tackle their jobs with professionalism, with rigor, with objectivity, with courage … so that’s not a term I would ever use to describe our workforce and I think it’s an affront to them,” he said.

That’s the response that set President Trump off.

“I don’t know what report current Director of the FBI Christopher Wray was reading, but it sure wasn’t the one given to me. With that kind of attitude, he will never be able to fix the FBI, which is badly broken despite having some of the greatest men & women working there!” he tweeted.

The report itself was anticipated by many to be far more damning to the FBI, with some believing that it would show a clear political bias within the organization.  Thankfully, for all Americans, this was not the case.
